can anyone inform me a little more about this? I plugged in my new skimmer and the pump is very loud. its a pinwheel needle pump and when the venturi valve is taken off or i plug the air hose, it is silent. I'm starting to think that any pump with the air hose hooked up is going to generate noise. it is a fairly loud humming noise. I know its not vibrations from sitting on the tank because i can hold the pump in my hand and get the same noise.

i also didn't mention, that it doesn't seem to be producing alot of bubbles. I have adjustment tube pulled all the way up, and there is only about .25" of bubbles sitting on top of the water.

I'm taking it you just started running the skimmer brand new? You have to allow the skimmer to break in so I wouldn't try to adjust the skimmer at this time. I'd dial it back for a couple days....You run a good chance of overflowing the skimmer.
As far as noise....You should/could hear a little sucking noise coming from the air line, but can't imagine it's that loud that you hear it over everything?????? Your complaining more of a humming noise? Have you tried holding the skimmer in certain areas trying to pinpoint the actual hum? Sounds more like the pump vibrating.

i'm havent tried extensively to figure out where the humming is coming from, but i do know its not vibrating against the tank because i can hold the pump in my hand so its not touching anything and get the same noise. I took the pump of of the skimmer to do this, so i know it is just the pump and nothing to do with the skimmer being attached or the placement of it.

no, nobody had it locally, so i bought it online. But beyond the noise now it doesn't seem to be working correctly
when i turn it on the water level gets too high and it fills up the collection cup with water. If i take out the tube that adjusts the water level in the skimmer it drops down to where it should, but as soon as i put that tube back in it immediately fills the cup. even when the tube is as low as it will go(only about 2" higher than with no tube"

Have you tried pulling the pump and opening the pump to check the impeller to make sure everything is good inside the pump? Also what is the depth of water the skimmer is sitting in?

i did check the impeller when i was looking for what was causing the vibration.
the skimmer is sitting in about 8" of water

Try raising the skimmer up to where it sits in about 6" of water. And I am assuming you've checked the Venturi is completely open, nothing obstructing the airline?
