I saw that you live in Merced, Ca. I just recently moved to Modesto and I'm have a hard time finding a decent fish store in the area. ***** in Modesto oddly enough, usually seems to have the best selection and the healthiest looking fish. But no where in the immediate area can I find a place with a really wide selection of quality saltwater life. If you know of any good places in the area let me know.
My email address is bino_98@yahoo.com.
Thanks

***** does usually have a nice selection of fish but they aren't very informative. There is a place in Turlock that is called The Pet Barn and the staff there is awesome. Well, most of them. Terry is the owner and he has a great set up. I use the sister store here in Merced and he has trained them well. It is worth the drive. Fish Haven in Modesto is pretty good too. I haven't been in there in a while but it might be worth a look. I am not sure the address but it is in the phone book. Same with The Pet Barn in Turlock. Good luck.

Yup!! They have quite a nice selection too. I don't go in there too often because I love my LFS but whenever I get to modesto, I always stop bye.

I hadn't heard that yet. I never buy there just check to see what they have then order it through my LFS if it fits. I found that they really didn't know that much about saltwater fish and decided that if they couldn't answer the questions asked by a customer and myself being a beginner I could, it didn't say much for them. Also, when I was there 2 weeks ago, they had firefish in with triggers and clownfish in with lionfish. Dumb!! I really don't know the pecking order for fish store chains like ***** and local fish stores. Do you know how that works. I know for example that for freshwater, LFS get their choice and stores like walmart etc get the left overs, the small ones and diseased ones. Is it about the same with Salt?
Thanks for letting me know about *****.

when you say fish haven are you talking about tropical haven?? I've been there number of times but only bought fish from them once. there selection in my opinion is very limited and their fish don't normally look so hot. i bought six damsels from them and 3 of them died within a day. I decided to test their water (which i know i should have done before i bought my fish) and the nitrates where a little high and the SG was at 1.029!!! way to high when i keep mine at 1.022. I've been to a place in ceres that had a little better selection but way over priced from what i was used to paying. i'll try to make a trip to merced soon and check out your suggestion and turlock also. anyway thanks for the suggestions. Also do you know of any places in sacramento or san francisco or anywhere in between worth the trip???
thanks

Sorry it took so long for me to reply. Yes, I am talking about tropical Haven. I haven't been there in a while so not sure what is going on with them. I have been to ***** and they do have a nice selection. I know that others have had problems in the past with the company but, You should always QT your fish and that should help avoid problems. Try them, if you notice your fish from there keep dying, then don't go there any more. That simple. You should try the Turlock Pet Barn or the one here in Merced. They are both great and very knowledgeable. Hope you can. If you do, email me and let me know what you think. my email address is platime@pacbell.net
