I want to bring my salinity on my tank from 1.029 to about 1.026. I know to do this slowly, but how do I calculate ? I have a 75 gal.
If I do a 10% water change do I calculate 1.029 x 9 and say 1.023 x 1
thus gettting 9.261 + 1.023 = 10.284 and divide by 10 getting 1.0284 ?
That would be really slow. It would take forever to get it down unless you do tons of water changes.
Does this makes sense to "weigh" it like this.
Or if I just a 2 gallons of RO, how do I calculate what that would do ? WHat number what I put in to weigh the RO ? "0"
Are there any calculators on the web to help me cheat ?
help...............................

try this:

or this

google found several using "salinity calculator" as the search input

Just use basic averages. Get the total volume of water currently in your tank. Say you are doing a 10gal water change, so you've taken out 10gallons of water from the tank, so you now have 65 gallons of water in your tank, with a salinity of 1.029. the sand/rock/fish in the tank means that you actually have less then a 75gallons of water total in your tank, but for now ignore that.
65 x 1.029 = 66.885
Now you're adding in 10 gallons of water at 1.023. 10 x 1.023 is 10.23, obviously. Now add them up 66.885 + 10.23 = 77.115
Now take the average. 77.115 divided by 75gallons of water total = 1.0282.
Yes, to reduce your salinity from 1.029 to 1.026 by doing water changes with 1.023 water, is going to take a long time. However you do want to lower salinity slowly. You can achieve this by reducing the salinity of your water change water. Start off with 1.023 like you wanted, then going lower, 1.021 1.019, etc till you get to 1.026.

Makes sense. I am looking at it the same way you are explaining. Now, next point is that my calcium is 480 because my salinity is so high. I know the IO reef crystals have high Ca if you get salinity too high. As I bring down salinity and therefore calcium, will this bring my KH in line a little more. My KH is 6 and I have been dosing with 8.4 to get it up to that.
My next question is if I bring down salinity therefore Ca a little more, will this aid in raising KH. I have been reading that Ca and KH can work opposite of each other.
thoughts anyone ?
