I just purchased a JBJ 24 Gallon Nano Cube Deluxe!

Could you tell me how to make a skimmer out of a cassette tape or point me in the direction for a diagramatic how-to? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated as well! Thanks!

P.S. - How long have you had that anemone under the stock lights in your 12 gal. Nano Cube?

Hello..good thing I happened to look in here today

First let me say that is NOT an anemone...it is a torch coral, and it is at the very top of my rockwork.I do have an advantage if something does'nt do well in my nano..I have two other tanks..one with MH and VHO lighting, the other with PC's.So far so good with the torch though.I would not recommend ANY anemone be kept in a nano. They get too big, there is no where for them to go without stinging a coral. There is not enough water volume for an anemone...if the slightest parameter were to get out of whack, the anemone could die and kill everything in the tank. And most of all,the lighting is far from adequate for an anemone, they need metal halides...period.
To make the cassette case mod, take a cassette case and take apart the two halves.Black would be nice, but I use the clear portion as I have tiny snails and tiny hermits that seem to like to venture in there and get stuck. This way I can see them and take them out.Take a pair of snips or some sort of tool with a grip, and snap off the tabs that extend upwards on the case half,so that it is flush.Place this against the intake portion...the flow will keep it there.I noticed if I lowered the water level a little bit,I got a nice downdraft effect in the case. The way I know how much water to top off in this tank is I go by the top of my Jager heater. When you do water changes the cassette case will fall away from the grate.I also notice it needs a good rinsing occasionally...water change time would be a good time for this.

I also dose my tank, and top off water daily.I do water changes twice weekly without fail.
Be careful not to put any extra stress or pressure on your JBJ...the 24's have a reputation of cracking.I suspect this could be a user problem.
Also...good luck with your tank!Take your time..patience and research are the key to a successful tank!

Awesome! Thanks for the tips promisetbg!
So you separate the cassette in half, make it flush, and slap it against the intake? You don't need to put any media in it? How does it skim waste and excess protein this way? Or is it a watch and learn type of thing?
Also, have you had any issues with water temperature rising too high? I have heard of folks with getting temperatures of 85 degrees and up with the lights on all day and then the temperature crashing at night and killing everything. Did you modify your lid to increase air circulation and do you keep your water level high enough so you cannot see it in the display?
Is the Jager heater reliable? I am scared to death of getting a heater that locks in the on position and nukes my tank. I have heard horror stories of this occurring.
Again, thank you for the quick replies, advice, and help. I am trying to learn everything I can before I begin; I want to be as prepared as possible.

Ok...the cassette mod is just a surface skimmer..not a protein skimmer. There is a design flaw on these tanks...the water goes out at a lower level than the surface, therefore you get a slick on top of the water. This just raises the water level...so the surface is skimmed. There is a new protein skimmer available by Current I think...it fits in the back chamber. Not sure what the performence is of it yet,as it is new...waiting to see what other people say.Do not use the media, rings or sponge that come with your tank. And consider upgrading the pump,as they are'nt efficient enough. On my 12 I used a 900 maxi jet.If you do change the pump, make sure to secure it tightly....I came home one night to water shooting out the top of the tank...

I have had no issues with temp, but I keep my place at 70 degrees. It is running about 81.3.
Jagers are one of the best heaters on the market.I did not modify the lid,or fans, and no you can't see the water level.

Awesome promisetbg! I am seriously anal about some stuff and seeing the water level is one of them. I now understand how the cassette tape modification would fix this.
Could you email me where you purchase the sponge filter you use for your tank that you rinse daily and replace weekly?

Thanks.
