Thank you for taking the time to contact McDonald's for the facts about our food. We appreciate this opportunity to share the following facts with you and clear up any misinformation that you may have.
McDonald's does not, and has never, imported any beef into the U.S. from South America. The information you received is absolutely incorrect.
McDonald's roots and heritage are firmly planted in the U.S. As such, we are deeply committed to U.S. agriculture and to our customers in the U.S. McDonald's is proud to be U.S. agriculture's number one customer. In fact, McDonald's is the world's largest purchaser of U.S. beef - and that will not change. Each year, McDonald's purchases nearly one billion pounds of beef from U.S. producers. The fact that we purchase such large volumes of U.S. agricultural products including beef, chicken, potatoes, lettuce, tomatoes, wheat and grains, eggs, dairy products, and so much more, is the very reason we are able to give our customers only the very best quality ingredients at such a good value.
We do want you to know that we are testing the use of a small percentage of high quality ground beef from Australia and New Zealand. We do not import beef from any other country, and never have. As you may know, there is a well-documented shortage of lean beef in the U.S., which is the type of beef we use. At the same time, the demand for lean ground beef is increasing dramatically. This is the only reason McDonald's is testing the use of a small percentage of high quality lean beef from Australia and New Zealand. Simultaneously, we are working closely with the National Cattleman's Beef Association and the American Farm Bureau to find the best ways for the U.S. beef producers to meet the expanding demand for lean beef.
Additionally, you may be interested to know that McDonald's is working to expand the export market, which will directly help U.S. producers by getting more U.S. beef into foreign markets. Last year alone, McDonald's suppliers exported more than 19 million pounds of U.S. beef to our restaurants in Central America and the Caribbean.
Finally, McDonald's has and will continue to play a leadership role in setting food safety and quality standards for the entire industry to follow. In fact, McDonald's is recognized as a leader in food safety around the world as we have pioneered, or been an early adopter of almost every quality and safety control standard in the industry. We have the absolute highest standards for food quality and food safety in the industry. Our food safety standards meet or exceed all industry and government requirements. We only use USDA inspected ground beef. And, we monitor, measure and inspect our food safety requirements for all our products every step of the way, including requiring regular independent, third party audits of all our supplier facilities.
I hope these facts are helpful to you in understanding McDonald's strong commitment to U.S. agriculture and U.S. producers, as well as our own strict food quality and safety standards. I also hope this has helped to clear up any misinformation you may have had about McDonald's. We value you as a customer and we sincerely appreciate your giving us the opportunity to address this important topic and share with you the facts about our food.
