Auto Feeder

I've recently begun using an Eheim Auto Feeder on my tank. I've always feed beneath the surface by pouring the food in with a cup of food in tank water allowing the fish to feed on submerged food. The auto feeder drops to the surface and my herbivores almost never go that high up. Any suggestions on how to get them to feed from the surface?

I started holding algae sheets in my and and breaking them apart by rubbing the sheet in between my fingers. Over time, they learned that my hand had food and would come up higher and higher to get to it. They will now all hand feed (makes it much easier you ever need to catch a fish if they trust your hands). It was a very slow process to get some of them up to the surface, my purple tang still doesn't like to come up.
