i was wondering how i could make an auto top off contraption for my 72 gallon tank so i dont always have to add a gallon of water to my tank everyday or so.

All you need is a holding tank, a float valve, some tubing, and a pump. Or you could always just buy a set up for like $75

i'd love to jump in to this thread...
i've heard of gravity feed top-off's - anyone know anything about these?

I have two float switches in my sump that run through a 12v converter, a relay, and power a $12 aqualifter pump which pumps in water from a 20g holding tank.

The water gets low in the sump, float switch drops, relay trips, aqualifter turns on and pumps water. Works every time.

I do have a few. I don't know how or where to post them on this site? I can't find any FAQ or Help on images?

OK here goes nothing.
The system works like a regular ATO. There are two float switches in the sump which use a 12v controller and relay. The two switches are set side by side and are wired in series. They are set this way for redundancy so that both must make contact for any water to flow and if either fails then no water flows.

I use two 20g containers for holding my saltwater and my kalkwater.

The 12v converter is on a digital timer that turns off at 6pm (back on at 630). At 605 an aqualifter in the sump turns on and runs for about 30 min draining 1.5g of water into a small holding tank.

About 630 this one timer and pump shut off and the saltwater holding tank timer and pump come on. It refills the sump until the float switches turn it off. About 7pm this timer shuts off the pump and the regular ATO form the kalk systems back on. It may sound a little complicated, but it all works off one 12v relay and the digital timers.

I have been empting the small container of waste water each night by hand but plan to add another timer to empty it into the washer drain when I have time.

I get mine from the local LFS for $12.50. Do a search and you can find them anywhere. Also FWIW I failed to explain that my system is an ATO and automated water change system. It changes 1.5g per day in saltwater and the standard ATO uses the kalk for makeup water.

Where do you get these switches? Do you just plug the pump into??? What do you plug the pump into?

Does anyone have a autotop off DIY plans that works on a pump/switch with a float valve?
I'd like to top off as the top off is needed.

These are very simple to make. You only need one small 12v power supply, A DPDT relay from RadioShack, two float valves (on line $6 each), and a double receptacle box (from HD) The wiring is very simple. I will try to locate the wiring diagram today and post it up here, or I will draw up another one.

Parts and guides are there.

Here is a picture of mine. I explained how it works in the ATO thread in the equipment forum. It's just gravity fed and works great. This cost me $28
