It is still kinda a toss up for me. Do I want to see the latest and greatest in technological advancement. YES!
Do I want to watch yet another movie, where the humans are the bad guys out to mine (and get this) unobtainium. (anyone see a political point there?) the implied US military out to eradicate a native population (hmmm)

The budget, depends on what you count. When we talk about 'budget' about most films we only use the production budget, not the total (production + promotion). That's why you usually hear; "Titanic cost $200mil to make." Not advertise.
Officially Avatar's production budget was $237 million. There are several films that cost more, the most expensive movie made is Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, which was $300mil in production.
FWIW, Avatar's promotional budget is $150 million.

It seems like EVERYONE on the late shows are promoting it. Even the people who weren't in it. They must have had EVERY single actor in hollywood at the premire.

Well...Life Reefer, you are low....Crypt you are closer.....and AquaKnight you are on to something......The entire production budget for Avatar was $600 Million!!
That includes production of the movie, advertising & other costs. James Cameron worked with camera companies regarding this movie to be sure the movie would look EXACTLY like he envisioned it!! All the costs together had FOX pay $600 Million for this movie....and for it to have $232,180,000 Worldwide in the first weekend is huge!! But that still isn't even half of what Fox put up!!
I do think that they marketed this movie fantastically!! The movie, video game, toys, etc. all came out at the same time!! This movie was an incredible gamble for the entire movie entertainment industry. If it were to bomb, Hollywood would never step off hteir straight path again...but so far so good!!

Got anything better?

And despite claims that the production and marketing costs of “Avatar” have sailed north of half a billion dollars, Fox insists that the math is fuzzy.
The budget for “Avatar,” a Fox spokesperson bluntly told TheWrap this week, “is $237 million, with $150 million for promotion, end of story.”

I saw it on Friday and I thought it was AMAZING! The whole time I was thinking, "omg...I have that in my tank!". Those things that he found in the forrest the firs time he was there and poked, right before the giant rino/hammerhead shark thing was all like "rawwwr" were definetly Coco Worms. lol I'm trying to find comparison pics, but that's not going too well. lol IMO, the Pandora is entirely modled off of a reef.
I think plot-wise it's a little lacking, but the effects made up for it. Easy to follow at least, and there really wasn't a slow moment to it. One part made me cry buckets, it reminded me of 9/11. When you see it you'll know what I'm talking about.

I agree with freaky here, there was alot of comprasions to reef critters, be it coco worms, mushrooms or jelly fish.
It did have a plot, it just happened to be quite predictable. But definitley worth the $19 to see it in IMAX 3D.
