the Florida summer is quickly approaching and my tank is already averaging 84 everyday. I know everybody says the ideal temp is 76-79 but I've never been able to get down there. I leave the air at 75 almost year round and the tank still sits in the mid 80's. Fish seem to be happy..but I wanna make sure I'm not stressing them.

Could add a chiller...very $$$$ though. What if you turned your air down a little more? Also, depending on the lights you are using, maybe they are playing a role in keeping your temp. too high. Just a thought.

My tank's temperature's been up there also due to the high temperatures. My fishes also seem even happier!!! I am not sure but I am trying to keep the temperature down to recommended range.

Man, I wish a had the problem you guys have. I live in MN and my only problem is how to safely chip the ice off my tank. :)

84 is not high enough to start worrying yet.The main thing with temp changes is that they don't happen too quickly.Say from 76 to 84 overnight. That would hurt the fish.Another thing is at higher temps the O2 in the water drops. So at higher temps you need to provide more oxegen to the water.Add another powerhead to ripple the surface.

Who turns on the heater in the ocean?? I'm not one to be too concerned about the temp in my tank. In the ocean what happens when it becomes chilly?

The thing about the ocean is that it has a huge reserve of energy to resist the change in temperature. You'll find that the temp changes very slowly, while at home in a tank it can change very rapidly. When El nino struck a couple of years ago, people were finding fish in areas they had never seen before. The fish were following their 'water' so to speak. Fish in aquariums don't have that luxury of moving, so we need to maintain a certain temperature to keep the fish happy and unstressed.

Good question Sea Pig. I have 125g and live in Arizona. My temp is usually at 79.8 / 79.9. I am happy at that temp. Well this week we are at 100 outside. My tank has been hanging out at 83.7 to 84.0. I was a little worried. If it gets any higher then I guess it will be time to do the chiller. When I bought my 125g it came with a chiller. I do not know how to use the thing, and hope I never have to. It is big and bulky. But, I guess you have to do what you have to do, to keep the fish happy. :)
I also have fans that kick on before the metal halides, and turn off after they turn off. It moves the water more and also cools it a little. The only down fall, more evaporation.
