I havent really had the chance to check it out. I've heard some people say Californina or the Richardson. From first glance, it looks alot like the California, but from where you're at (in the US), there arent alot of places that are gonna get in a West Coast species. Hopefully, it's not the Richardson, or you're gonna have a 5' Moray on your hands.
Give me a day or so...I just got home, drunk and hungry. Moray species is the last thing on my mind, right now...I'm craving some Ramen Noodles!

Sorry...got those mixed up. The California is the larger species. Richardson grows to aprox. 32cm.
I'm on my second bowl of Chicken Ramen Noodles!

Fishbase isnt loading for me, right now...dont know what's wrong.
From the pics I've seen, of Gymnothorax eurostus, they have more of a curved jaw (upper and lower)...doesnt look like Seth's Moray has the same jaw type.
I'm still stumped...no matter how many pics I look at, of the California and Richardson, they both look like yours.

Dan, the grammaticaly correct phrasing of that would ber "seth and I went to the lfs store today" but anowho...lol Yeah, he said that they can be called both, but they prefer Pil. to Richardsons....Dos that help you any?

I'd be inclinded to say Richardson. But, who's to tell...I keep nothing but Morays, but who's to say I'm the expert...give it 6 months to a year...see how big he grows. lol! If he gets too big, I'll buy him and you can ship him to me. You know I'll give him a good home.

here is the california moray http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/Spec...ry.php?id=2613
as for the Gymnothorax richardsonii
Richardson's moray it doesnt look much like your eel at all but then again the pics are shown of dead eels for this one http://www.fishbase.org/Photos/Pictu...9&what=species
info on this one http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/spec...e=richardsonii
but by th coloring and shape of the snout i would guess the abbotts is still the closest but as eels grow the heads do tend to change in shape IME
you will also find in fashbase more than one name can be given for one species of eel.. either way you have a nice looking eel .. you may wish to contact someone that is an expert on eel ID (i have done this in the past)
here is someone that may be of help to you
