I had a suspicious feeling that it was ice build-up on the wings. obviously wherever they took off from didn't bother to de-ice the plane and its wings prior to take off. Definitely not a pilot error.

Flying an unsafe plane is the worst pilot error. Before you light the fires, the plane should be safe. Before take off the plane should be safe.
I do not know the whole story, but it does sound like they flew into icing. If the icing was known, then the pilot should have called for de-ice. If unknown icing, and they were slow and heavy then they were in trouble.
The PIC is always in command. You do not have to follow any instructions given you as PIC as long as you have a good reason for NOT following them.

i heard from my mother in law yesterday that extreme makeover home addition might rebuild the home that was hit.
seeing they are in the better part of town and have insurance not to mention a huge lawsuit .they dont deserve it.
i know the builder that built the one here in keller texas that will be on in two weeks he just filed for bankruptcy but is still in business .guess the show didnt make it to tv fast eneough for him to help.

No arguments there. The plane may have flown into icing but when I heard more reports of the plane being set to auto-pilot during bad weather, I thought "Oh boy, not a good thing to do..."
