What RU views on backgrounds.
Store bought (picture type) or Painted?
If painted , what color?
Just your thoughts,thanks.

im not a huge fan of the picture background, but right now i have a solid blue background. ive seen alot of others with solid black background, which i like just as much as the blue.

i stick with either sold blue or black. i have seen tanks that come with a mirror backround which is quite nice but i dont know if it bugs the fish haha

I had some of those 12" square mirror tiles that I tried for a background and it really freaked out the little guys something terrible.

I don't think I care for the picture backgrounds for a saltwater tank. I believe they are more suited for freshwater,IMO.
Blue or Black seems to be a popular color.
Does the black absorb too much light?
Any more thoughts?

Thanks

i have a oceon scene with corals and stuff like that with blue open water high on the picture i thought it looked nice when i set the tank up and now wish i would of just painted it blue or black... i think a tank looks sharp with light blue on top slowly working down to a dark blue at the bottom which is prolly what i will do when/if i ever need to move my tank.

That sounds like a plan, I like that idea.

I like black because it really shows the bright or neon colors in the tank

+1 on that.
I have an all BLACK background on all of my tanks. Looks the best IMO, I had a gradient blue on one for a while but thought it looked cheesy and also takes away from the 'inhabitant' colors. That's why I switched to BLACK.
Black looks great, everything 'pops' against a black background, especially colorful corals and coralline on LR. Try black and I guarantee you'll fall in love.
Painting vs. Background is up to you. I have a background type since I switched to black after my tank was setup. If you do get the background style ones you need to get this product, its about $5 online. Its a clear gel liquid that you apply to the background and press it up against the back glass. You then squeegee out any bubbles and it sticks completely flat against the glass and makes any background look amazing. Theres a HUGE difference with just a background taped or one that has this. It makes it look like its actually the back of the tank instead of just a piece of paper behind the glass. It also allows the tank light to illuminate the background and doesn't refract off the back glass panel like it usually does. I gave this stuff a try just for the heck of it and wont ever tape a background again! This stuff is awesome.

I don't dig the whole "blue background".
All of my tanks, everything from a 30gal to a 450gal, have had the backs painted with Krylon Fussion black spray paint.
I think it gives an "indefinate" look to the tank. The blue backgrounds show fish too vividly, against the color. I think the black gives the tank a very good depth perception.

I prefer coraline pink overgrowth as a background. *S* but I have a blue background tank and a non background tank personally I prefer blue over none but I have so much coraline on the back of the tank you cant tell there is no background anymore.
I hate picture backgrounds, painted is the way to go IMO. salt creep tends to build up between the tank and stick on backgrounds and thats a PITA to clean.

I'm sure all of us would prefer the "coraline pink overgrowth" as a background.
I've dosed calcium and all kinds of crap, just trying to get calcium to grow in my aggressive tanks...yeah, no such luck...I only wish!

Black paint. Although I painted my DT blue, I would choose black if I could do it all over again. It would help hide my PS, PH's and HOB filter.

black or blue is nice...i'd have a black backround if my tank was against the wall, but since i can view it from the rear, i have no backround.

I hate the picture backgrounds. They looks so cheesy! We tried both black and gradient blue in our first tank (sheet not painted). The black looked good for a while and if you don't keep the back glass scraped all other algae except pink coraline looks horrible there.
Our 150 now has a dark blue background and so far I like it. Black would have been too much for it IMO.
Then again everybody has a different taste and if you like a background scene or black or blue, you need to go with what works for you. There is no right or wrong here.

black background. I sprayed with regular all purpose spray paint. worked great. I use to not like backgrounds but it hides so much clutter/wires behind the aquarium and makes for a clean look. I dont like the typical blue though. the bluer the lighting the more I dont like blue backgrounds.

I painted mine black. I kind of wish I had gone with a deep blue but I think with the coraline growing along the back, the black has worked out nicely.
