I'm not really a backpacker, but I like to camp and hike. Here is the view from the top of a trail my wife and I hiked in Hawaii. We were something like 2200 feet above sea level.

I have hiked Isle Royal National Park . It is a truely amazing and diverse place. Solitude is what you'd expect and recieve. I have pics but would need to edit them down to fit these pages. Up too 17 inland lakes within the largest lake in the world. God how I love it so. Moose ,wolves and plenty of fish . Get away from the harbors ($$$$ boaters) and walk the trails . The western part of the Island is more desolate and the Minong trail is as tough as you'll find. I have gone back many times over the years. If you evr get the chance ,you wont be dissapointed.....

Hey magoo, I've been trying to plan a trip up to Isle. What info can you give me on when the best time to go is? Also, do you remember how much the ferry was?

To answer your last ? first. The ferry runs about 80 bucks+out of Houghton. There is also a ferry out of copper harbor but have never taken that one. The Houghton ferry is alot larger and wont rock and roll as bad. I have also taken the plane serveice out of Houghton airport. You might want to consider it . I know it runs alot more but the boat ride out of is 6+ hours , by seaplane 45 min. Whats your time worth???
I prefer the seaplane You scheduale not theres . Thats the nice part.
As far as what time of the year to go, I think thats alot depending on what type of weather you are looking for. Opening weeknd in May is Cold but doable. As the weather turns warmer in June the black flies come out when you get inland . Not a very pleasent exp if you happen to be there when they come out. I have been there over the 4th of July and it was 37 degrees. I was there in late July and the weather is warm(high 80's) but you always get a cool breeze off Superior. My favorite time to go is in the fall. Geting cool ,sweatshirt weather, leaves crunching beneath your feet, and with the leaves gone , the whole island opens up to a veiw that you wont ever see in the summer. Fishing on the inland lakes has always been good the times I have gone. I have Caught many pike on chicken bone while watching the moose feed on the shoreline. Not a better sight in the world. Cant post websights on the link , but if you want them email me..magooo2@yahoo

We were on Oahu. That's not diamond head, although you could see it from the other side of the of the mountain. I think this is Diamond Head in these pics.

Thanks for the info Magoo, it sounds like fall is the time to go! I had no idea the ferry ride is 6 hours. I think we might opt for the sea plane...

We're not exactly backpakers either but camping and day hiking....will be headed out toward NM in a month and a couple of days in Yosemite in May!

Here is West Texas from last year. Caprock Canyons State Park and Palo Duro Canyons State Park.

I've done a few sections of the AT (TN, Western NC) but nothing too serious. Ran into a bear problem on the lower end of the NC section. That was interesting to say the least. Good news is I learned how to tell if a bear was nearby....just smell the air for sour milk. Would LOVE the opportunity to hike the entire trail some day, but who can afford that much time?

Well, my wife and I are leaving for our Knobstone Trail trip right after work today. The Knobstone is Indiana's longest foot trail at 58 miles...
I hope to be back late Sunday night but who knows!
