Does anyone know of a backup power source for fishtanks? I am looking for something similar to the UPS they use for PC's just in case there is a power outage when nobody is home.
Thanks

Depending on your power requirements you could use an APC Smart-UPS. I have a Smart-UPS 620 for my tank. The reason to go with a Smart-UPS from APC instead of one of the cheapies is because the Smart-UPS is made to handle motor loads. If you call APC and talk to a rep and tell them what you are using it for they will help you with making the right decision.

Thanks for the information. I am going to add a backup generator to my home eventually.... after I am done with the renovations. But in the meantime I want to protect my fish.......
Thanks

I contacted APC today and they told me which UPS I needed to run my filters and my lights for at least 2 hours. My question is what should I connect to the UPS? I would think water flow alone would be good if there is a temporary outage or should I connect everything (lights, protien skimmer, uv)I would like to have the most amount of time in case there is a long blackout like last year here in NY.
Thanks

I would run the phs' with one or two with the air lines attached to oxygenate the water and maybe a heater depending on the ambient temp.

I only connect my main pump to the battery backup, and the lights and other stuff to the surge supression side. Depending on the battery backup unit you may have some outlets with battery backup and the rest with surge supression only.
The only reason I have the backup at all is to keep my main pump running should the power go off. With hurricane season upon us I have been looking at a backup generator. At this point I have too much invested in my tank to let a 24 hour power outage kill it.
