A couple years ago i got out of the hobby now i am back in it. I am cycling a new tank and i was wondering if these bacteria bottles actually work to cycle the tank faster? I know the ones that require refrigeration are best, but is there a specific brand that works best?

Some say yes and some say no. I think just regular cycling with live rock or a piece of shrimp is probably best. The bottled stuff won't hurt though.

I have never understood why people felt the need to spend money on something that is free. Way back in the early days of the hobby (late 60's, early 70's) we used a handful of dirt from the garden to seed the tank, and it worked fine. Like Sep said - can the bottle and use live rock or a piece of shrimp. Please do not use a damsel!

Im not a fan of fish cycle, i thought it was torture for the fish my first time around and when it came time to add fish i felt bad they got eaten. I just wanted to know because some of them claim that you can add fish the next day. Thanks for the information, on average how long with a shrimp and live rock will it take to cycle?

That completely depends on the size of your tank, the amount of flow, how much rock is added, if the rock is cured, how high the ammonia spikes, etc.

Leave the shrimp in there until you see a change in the ammonia levels. Average is a month. If your LR is cured, less time and ammonia spike. Optimal amount of LR is 1 to 1 1/2 times pounds versus gallon capacity of the tank. (i.e. 50g= 50 to 75lbs or LR)
IMHO; A LFS stocks bacteria in a bottle for people that haven't learned the golden rule or patience. I know. I was one of those people
My LFS gave me some bac in a bottle for a nano reef I was setting up. Just as intsructed, I waited three days then added my fish. All died within a week.
You can add bac in a bottle, but it won't change the time needed to create the nitrogen cycle. Good Luck
