Bacteria in saltwater

Hi,
I was just wondering, is the bacteria in the whole nitrogen cycle for saltwater the same as the bacteria in the nitrogen cycle for freshwater? Thanks.

The cycle is the same, but you are dealing with two different types of bacteria. I would not mix the two types of water.

There are many types of ammonia and nitrite comsuming bacteria in fresh and salt water. The majority only live in one type, but there are nitrifying bacteria that live in both and these are usually the ones they culture for cycling products that can be used in either. Keep in mined that the strongest and fastest growing nitrifying bacteria in either will be ones more specialized to there environment. If you switch from one to the other you would lose part of your bio-filter, how much would depend on how big a part of your filter is specific to that water type. In a tank that has been up for a long time the vast majority of the bio filter will be the bacteria specialized to that water type.

Its generally the same type of bacteria tha helps break down mulch for gardens.there was report ,forgot where what magazine from the manufacture of the bio-wheel that there might be somthing else even smaller that is doing or helping the breakdown in aquariums.

Thanks everyone. I was wondering this aloud yesterday night as I was holding my bottle of 'Stress Zyme' and noticed it was good for fresh AND saltwater. I had stopped by a store the other day, and the guy in there told me that he has seeded a new tank a few ways. 'Stress Zyme' to seed a tank and also took sand from an established tank. He said the tanks seeded with the established sand always seem to do better.
Anyone use Stress Zyme in saltwater?
