Bacteria survivability in low salinity?

Hi there ! My name is Jonathan and my wife is Kellie. We are previous salt tank owners (55 gallon w/various fish) and just moved back to Texas! The military has shipped me everywhere and finnally i can come home to the Big Tex. My wife and i bought a house in Corpus Christi and picked up a 75 gallon. I am starting a new 75 gal. with prior used dead rock + RO water mixed salt. I bought the bacteria in a bag pretty much called "spira" something like that (to speed the cycle). The bag must be refrigerated. I put two bags(2 ounces) in and the water level in the tank is 3/4 of the way full. i want to put the rest of RO water in but i don't have any more salt. Is this going to kill the bacteria i have just paid for , if i lower the salinity by adding more water? Please let me know as i am anxious to set this one up . I paid 65$ for it at GoodWill. What a buy . I will put pictures soon. My previous tank is @ Dailymotion.com if you want to check it out type in CAPS "THE HOLLANDS SALTWATER " and you will find it. Take care

Welcome to the boards Jon, I've never heard of "spira" but if it is benef. bacteria then it will be fine in lower salinity levels.

Welcome to the board!!
I hate to tell you, but you wasted your money on the bagged bacteria purchase. It speeds up the cycle process maybe a bit, but you are better off taking your time in letting the tank cycle on it's own.
Are you going to cure the rock in a separate container or in the tank? If you do it in the tank, be prepared to have a few smelly days... hehe. Not fun!

+1. If you want to inject some healthy bacteria into your tank, buy one piece of cured liverock from your LFS and add it to the tank. Welcome to the boards!
