Bad LFS

I'm not sure where to post this, so I figured I'd start here...
I have an LSF in my area that used to have a good reputation. I stopped using them for most things long ago, but still go in occasionally to buy dry goods. My question:
Is there a group or committee or anyone we can report a bad LSF to? I'm not talking about bad customer service or anything like that, I'm talking about a place that is literally cruel to animals the way they sell their livestock. Everytime I go in there its a downright shame. It makes me sad. All of their fish are either dead or dying, or sold to some unsuspecting soul beforehand. You should see this place - horrible lighting in a 10 gal tank and they throw anemone's in there. They just wilt away. And over 50% of their tanks have little or no circulation! I'm not kidding - its like the pumps have been turned off!!
Anyway, I could go on with more details. Is there anywhere we could report them to possibly clean up their act and stop the madness?

so besides not giving them my business, there's nothing that can be done to stop this ridiculous treatment and abuse of animals and the hobby?!

Well in our state pet stores are regulated by USDA, but they only cover mammals not fish or birds. Unfortunetly there is not a whole lot you can do except not give them your business.

beheron, Get their email # for me. If enough people complain, they might straighten up their act. The first thing to do is tell them you will take your business elsewhere because of their irresponsibility. It is best to let them know you are an unhappy customer. I have witnessed that also and have been very pleased to see those merchants do not stay in business very long.

The main LFS I go to is really good. They help me a lot with setting up my tank and the plenum system, tested my water after cycling, and stuff like that. They never try to sell me bad things. He special ordered my tank for me at and it arrived very fast. They did urge me to buy their last CSL hood which was kinda expensive, but now that I bought it, I am very happy with it. They take great care of their fish and corals. The only bad fish shops in my area is a ***** and one other small fish shop.[/

mary - I dont have an email for them unfortunately. And, even more unfortunate, I dont think that would bother them. They obviously dont care right now about losing business.

Bheron, Contact your local town selectman and find out what the laws are in your area. I come from Pa. and their is a very different attitude about animals in genaral there. Any animal. I call it the "farmers" attitude. I grew up on a farm there and in returning from toime to time for many years I am surprised to find in the northwestern part of the state it has not changed. Here in the there is more respect for all animals, yet ***** and some pretty irresponsible pet stores can be found. As long as the majority of people use these stores they will flourish. Unfortunately. There is a reptile store near us that lost my business when I saw thier adorible bunnies for sale for snake food. I love rabbits. Have had any. Wonderful pets. I can not understand people who enjoy watching their boa squeeze the life out of anything. In the wild that has to exist. I feel for you having to witness animals being treated improperly. At least we are good to whst we own. That should make you feel better. Many of us exist.

thanks mary! have to ask what exactly is a "selectman"?
also, are you saying that the laws are more lax in PA?

Lost the first reply! There is another forum called Aquarium, discussing off-topic subjects. You might inquire with that forum. A selectman is a town administrator who was voted in by the people in the township. Go to town hall and ask who you might talk to about this. I agree it is just as inhumane to care for marine animals in such a way. I am glad you care. Our responsibility is to care for our environment and watching someone have such a disrespect for a part of that is a bitter pill. I do also wish there were more laws to protect marine life. You have me searching. Check with that other sight also.
