Bad LFS...

Ok, i went to the LFS yesterday, and i was soooo disgusted with the quality of life for the fish they have there. There were 2 porc. puffers with collapsed stomaches, :scared: the yellow tangs were sooo skinny you could see all of their ribs, :scared: they had a dying wrasse, an "orange shoulder" tang that was pale yellow and too skinny, a tank of lettuce nudi's with no algae in it at all, :scared: and their seahorse tank had like 1 hitching post for about 13 seahorses. All of the tanks just have water and CC, no decorations or anything, so all of the fish are just always out in the open. I feel sooo bad for those fish.
Is there an animal commissioner i can call to have the place inspected? :help: I hate that this store can continuously buy more fish, and almost kill them before someone buys them...
The employees are not too keen on aquatics either. I asked some questions about some fish, ones that i know the answers to, and they made up a whole bunch of bull$&!* answers. That part was kinda amuzing.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Unfortunately this happens at a LOT of fish stores. All we can do is hope someone with a head on their shoulders gets hired there and turns things around.

Unfortunatly, there are many more bad LFS than good ones. But there are organizations that inspect places tht sell dogs and cats, but not one for fish.

That's makes me mad!!! my fish have more personality than cats, and dogs and birds.
I love my *****! They're the only LFS i actually trust. Only, the smartest kid there just moved to a different one about 30 min. away.
There is one moron there, so i don't trust anything he says... Told me once that a leather coral was a mushroom... :notsure: Dumb@$$...lol

I used to work in a *****. Dont trust anything anyone says there. About 95% of the people there are hired to work cashier and end up covering everything. In my store there was only 3 people that knew anything about salt water fish. I was the only person that knew anything about reptiles....
Bottem line. ***** sucks.

The ***** near by us is pretty nice...There's quiet a few that works there that know a lot about saltwater fish. Then there's one that's very close to us, only like 5 min drive. They have a wide variety choices on fresh and saltwater fish. They all know what they're doing there. Sometimes their fish don't look so good, I think it's because they grew too big and had wayyy too much on their hands to work with, BUT they did hire new employees recently, usually around 6 or so that works there at all times. That is the place where they held the local Reef Club meeting monthly. Then the other LFS, freshwater looks great but the saltwater looks VERY poorly taken care of. Last time I was there, I saw at least 3 dead saltwater fish and they over price on everything more then the other LFS. I wish if people open places like that would take care of them better.
Also another LFS that's near my grandmother's house, about 1 hr 15 min drive from me. Her shop stinks and everything is dirty as heck. She hasn't cleaned in years I think, I went in for the very first time like 3 years ago cause that was the only pet shop in my grandmother's town to purchase something for my parrot and it was dirty then, 3 years later I went back with my partner, it was still dirty. Even though everything is dirty, her fish are the HEALTHIEST around that I've ever seen, bought a few and they're thriving. Strange huh.. :notsure: I'm afraid of her shop though, always cough to death when I walk out of there. :scared:

not its not strange at all, i was having this same discussion with my buddy who has a LFS, his shop is not all glitz and glamour, but i can always count on the fish being very healthy and he takes care of them more so than focusing on a great display of powerheads stacked neatly and the floor showing my reflection. I think in turn it does hurt business, but he is more focused on hobbyists than just people having a tank because it looks pretty,(i know this didnt come out right bc we all like pretty tanks, but i think you understand what i mean)

YOu took the words right out of my mouth.........I have only ever seen one ***** and thats the one locally, that has a handle on their saltwater fish and does a great job at keeping it right........now if they could only do the same with the freshwater section
I raised a rukus one time in one of the local walmarts.........and made it a point to keep rasiing heck everytime i went in there if I seen fish that were poor and dead etc........as time went by I took a few pis of the tanks, and they were pityfull. ONe filter inlet was clogged with fish it could not pull any water...........fungus ridden and ulcered fish of all kinds......I rasied heck again.......got into a real pi$$ing contest with manager, who told me to leave, and i refused........they called security and up comes the local law enforcement types as well.........They read me the riot act, (they being walmart security and the manager(s) but the local law enforcement types just stood there. Then they told me i was "Banned" from coming on Walmarts property, and told me I had to get off their property imediately, thats when the local law folks moved a little, and I needed no further proding, so I left.......BUT they never got my name and for some time, my wife would go in there while I waited outside and she would make a pass by the tanks and rasie heck......I really got their attention when I told them via email i had pics of their pityfull fish department and thought thre local news could use it for a filler perhaps.....and possibly peta and some others........The wal mart store no longer carries fish of any kind anymore..

Yea I know what you mean, BUT her shop isn't like your buddy's. Even the floor is dirty and you CAN'T see your reflection. Her boxes of stuffs has a pile of dust and co
eb on top of it. Most of her tanks have full algae growth to the point you can't even see the fish cause they hide within. But they're very healthy!!

Anyone in or arounf Houston, Texas must try "Aquariumword". The place is owned by a marine biologist and his staff is incredible. (And no, I'm not the guy that owns the place!!)

Its really bad here in FL. I am begining to believe that those not qualified to work at Burger King eventually find jobs at pet stores

The problem is they usually hire people based on retail experience in general rather than procuct knowledge and the ensueing stupid mistakes cost everyone money. Bad business practice indeed and you would think they would learn from there mistakes but obviously not

Basiclly anyone can get a job here in FL. All you have to be willing to do is work for poverty wages and no benefits. Other than that you dont have to know anything about the job your doing at all.
Why last week I couldnt even spell nuclear scientist, now I is one.

YAYAYAYAY!!! I went to this LFS yesterday... well, is it considered local if it's an hour drive? hmmm... anyway, I'M IN LOVE!!! They were exactly what you were talking about. The store is in a warehouse in the middle of nowhere, there were boxes everwhere, the displays sucked, and it was a pretty crappy store... but their fish were the healthiest fish i've ever seen.
The whole store was saltwater. They had about 100 50 gallon tanks of fish and corals!!! I've never seen such healthy corals, or as many in one store. I've never seen anemones so big, or colorful. There was an anemone bigger than my head! :scared: It was sooo incredible! The guy sounded like he knew what he was talking about too, which is a major plus.

Awww! They had baby seahorses, like 3 days old!!! They were sooo cute, probably the size of a pencil tip. ugh, i can't wait to setup my seahorse tank! I can't wait to get corals!!! I CAN'T WAIT!!! (deep breath, breathe in, breathe out...) whew... sorry, i haven't been able to vent my happiness yet. :cheer:
