I am leaving to go on vacation to Isreal in 8 days,
and my dad is going to take care of my 92 reef.
The BIG problem is.. there is going to be a black out in my neiborhood within the time i am on vacation. I know this because i got that in a letter in the mail, because they want to add/change something in the electricity. They said that they will
mail us a letter 2 days before the power will go out.
.. and i will not be here.
The whole power outage can take up to 4 hours, and
i am worried that my tank will have NO oxygen!
What should i do?
Any suggestions i will greatly appriciate!
Thanks,
Adam

You can have ur dad but in a battery powered air stone while the powers out and that should help a lot...4 hours doesnt seem to bad, but im not the expert maybe someone else can fill me in on this..
Hope this helps

yea they make a thing called a bubble box that would be in the fishing section at Wal -mart. It runs on batteries and makes bubbles with a airstone so hence you would have oxygen...you may have to get several though

Four hours with no circulation is not a big deal, if it was more than that I'd be worried about oxygen levels...
Heat would be a concern if it was cold out, but this is summer...
My main concern for your Dad would be that all the "pumps" start running after a powerout, and the over flow starts "flowing"...

Mr.Tuna - do you have FPL if so they just did the same thing at my house. Also mail me a notice. They knocked on the door told me when they were turning off the lights. It was only for about 45 minutes. I think they say four hours just in case something should happen.

I wouldn't sweat 4 hours. Now, 4 days, that's a different story . . . As everyone has already mentioned - get yourself a battery powered pump and stone. NO problem for the old man!

oh ok. Thanks alot!
but do you still think that a generator is good?
Becuase my dad is willing to get one. Not only for now, but
in the future if this were to happen again, and my aunt or grandpa, or someone else, who doesnt really know my tank will have to be here because of a family vacation.

FWIW, they also have battery powered air pumps that plug into a socket so if the power goes out, the pump can sense it and turn itself on. That way it doesn't matter if anyone is home or not when the power goes out. They're only around $12 or so. I have 2 and they work great.
A generator would be great...especially if someone else is paying for it (pretty pricey). However if no one is home when the power is out, they don't do much good.

I agree that 4 hours wouldn't be a big deal, but if you have a lot invested in your livestock and can afford a generator, it's not a bad idea. I live in Michigan, and we can be without power for days sometimes after big storms. You can bet I'll have a generator for my 300 gallon once it's set up. I've gone without power for a day on my 55 gal. Temp was my main concern, but it only dropped a degree or so and everyone was fine in the end.

get the generator.
I had a 5 hour blackout and ended up losing a fish. I have a pretty heavy bioload and I'm guessing he was the weakest link. All the others were huffing and puffing and looking pretty stressed.

I assume that if you do go the way of the generator, you or your dad will be running just the tank stuff? ie extension cords from the gene to the tank?
It is a very bad idea to run a generator back into the house house wiring.

Thanks alot for all the help! :)
I will get a generator, though i only have about 5 coral, and
an anenome, it is still good not only for now, but for the future when my tank will have tons of coral.

yea i went without power for 4 days and now have a generator wired so when the power goes out my tank doesn't even blink......which is very helpful cause i can take care of other pls corals when the power goes out and maybe get a free frag or two!
