I would suggest trying to get a mated pair. One female and one male. I think a third would get ugly.

I'm with Brian on 2 vs. 3. I've been doing research on them b/c I want a mated pair as well. And, for your tank size, 2 is best.
At the Dallas Aquarium, they have at least 4 mated pairs that all hang out in separate parts of the tank. So 3 could get ugly, and one might get "left out" in the cold.

i have 2 bangaii in my 30long and they are very peaceful. I got them at a very young age and introduced them at the same time. I got lucky and they mate on a regular basis now.

Hello...
Everyone is right about the pairing and you should only have 2 for your size tank. If you want to know how to --- them... the best way to do so is to look at either the extended dorsal fin on the males/females, sorry cant remember which has them. But either has a notably longer one than the other. The other way to distinguish them is to look at the blackness around the mouth, I think males seem to have more darkness there.
Sorry about the nebulousness of my answer, if you want, email me and I'll give you the links to some very insightful articles on Bangaii Cardinals.
