Base rock or live rock

Ok so as you can see I have 75lbs of live Fiji rock that has been going strong for almost a year now. I would like to build up the height of the rock near the surface of the water. Since I have plenty of purple, red, and even green fiji colors on my current rock, could I get away with base rock or would that look knarly?
If I used live rock should I use more branching types to give more character? What would you reccomend?

If you can afford it...buy more Fiji rock. Otherwise base rock will seed and look just fine. I used all Fiji in my tank. I like the look of that rock. Two years ago I did purchase two sized good pieces of base rock that was long and flat for a shelf to make my caves...it has all kinds of coralline now and is live rock.

Get some Tufa rock. Very light a porous. Use it as the base to bring your Fiji up towards the top. The Tufa will color up in no time and you won't be able to tell the difference. Needs to be rinsed really well, a lot of dust on any pcs. I have bought. But then you can just add it into the tank with no concerns about spikes or anything.

Hey those rocks do look good. Can I just place them in the tank when I get them or do I have to go through a curing process?

As long as you're getting just the dry rock, no curing is required. I would however rinse them in saltwater prior to placing in the tank.

Today? Hm, maybe everyday. I still like coming around here Henry, just don't jump in as often
. Usually I check out threads if I see you or Joe commenting, but it really depends on my time availability - not spending nearly as much time on any forum lately - just too busy.

Yeah I was talking to Mr_X about how slow it is. Glad to see you around here once in a while though. School is back and you are rocking again huh?

Yeah, hasn't been a lot going on over there lately - it loses and gains. Yes, school is back in full swing and now that I've finished up with all my field trips for the semester, I can concentrate on getting caught up with grading and updating threads/checking forums when I wish to procrastinate (uh . . . all the time
)

its all about the ca$h your willing to spend, it'll look gnarly for a few months with base but will save you alot of dough and you wont have to cure it. btw the PB looks good glad it made it thru the ich thing...

If you can find someone with Tonga branch rock. it will be hard since they stop all harvesting of it a few years back but i got mine about 5years back and i still find people selling it but it is "dead".

lil. guppy: i got 50 lbs of base rock from marco. he had a pre-macna sale that translated into $10 flat rate ground shipping. i'm really happy with it. i just added it straight to my tank (against better judgement and the suggestions of marco and king_neptune.) the only spike i saw was in my SG since the salt doesnt evaporate from the rock when the water does. i definately recommend them!

scott t, pm'ing online vendors isn't allowed, but if you google the rght spelling, MARCO and not macro (notice the difference in placement of the R hehe :) you'll find it. since you're in NY, and MARCO rocks is in Mass, shipping shouldn't be too much
