Basic Sump/Fuge Design w/Explanation & Terms

Not to sound like a spoiled newbie
but I have a headache from searching the forums for an elementary level Sump/Fuge Thread. One that shows a basic design with explanations so someone who has absolutely no idea about sump - fuge - overflow plumbing can get a basic understanding.
I want to design one to fit in my awkward stand (the surfline stand with a cabinet in the middle...so annoying
) but I want to understand the design/construction more thoroughly before I even attempt...
Does anyone know of a thread that does for Sumps/Fuges what Lion_crazz's Thread
did for newcomers to the hobby.

There are to many variables involved IMO you would be better served if you posted some pics of your particular situation

I am in the process of the same thing, basically its a learning experience as I am going. Measure the space inside of your stand for starters. Basically you want to know the height, and the width, and the length.
I have a tough stand to work with, one for a 72bow so the width gets narrow towards the ends and limits the size of the tank I can stick in there. I have found the largest effective tank I can stick in there is a 29gal.
When you figure out what the largest size you can stick in your stand then you at least have the first part down (provided you want to use the largest possible)
Then its a matter of setting up baffles, theres a bunch of DIY videos of sump building on youtube. You can get an idea of what you want to do from those, plus it shows you how exactly to do it.

I just went through the same thing you did, and yesterday, I successfully completed my sump/fuge and overflow box.
Here's what I did...

I changed the plan a little bit though.
There a bunch of threads in these links that helped me a whole lot.

If you have any particular questions, post them.

hey woody should the return pump be the same GPH as the skimmer pump? For example. I have a asm gx1 with a sedra 3500. Should My return be a sedra 3500 or bigger?

Why? No the return has nothing to do with the skimmer. the OF and return need to be sized correctly. Return pump with added head pressure should be less than the OF's max drain.......
