I have a 15 gallon long sitting in my garage at home. My 5.5nano is on my desk in my dorm and it is doing fine but lately ive been looking at getting new lights for the tank. Ive also come across several DIY all in one tanks and thought that those would be so cool.
Heres what Ive thought about doing. Taking the 15 long cutting the top off so its open. Taking 2 pieces of acrylic and putting one piece at each end of the tank leaving a gap at each end and cutting the acrylic with teeth for an overflow. Then at the opposite end of the teeth drilling a hole for a PH. One side I would put another piece of acrylic so that the powerhead was seperated from the overflow and adding LR rubble and chaeto. Basically the water would flow over the overflow into the back chamber where the chaeto and rubble is then over a piece of acrylic to prevent sand and heavy debris from getting into the power head then back into the tank
At the other end of the tank do the same thing except no chaeto and do a little eggcrate stand so that i could put filterfloss at overflow with carbon and maybe room for a future skimmer. Then the water would do the same thing and flow over another piece into a return and back in the tank. This would give me 2 powerheads returning water and providing the flow.
This would allow me to have no filter, I havent researched lights but i wanted to get some nice ones since christmas is coming up and i could get a decent set up.
I would then just transfer over all the contents of my current tank with new sand into the 15 gallon and then slowly add more lr to prevent another cycle.
What do you guys think of this? Hopefully it wasnt too confusing ill try and draw a picture if you guys think that will help
