My suggestion is to read The Reef Aquarium by J.Sprung and C.Delbeek. This book will explain almost everything you need to start and maintain a reef aquarium. It will explain the natural reef in great detail. You will refer to this book often. It's kind of expensive but worth it. Another good book that's not as expensive is Natural Reef Aquariums by J.Tulluck. It's a lot easier to understand for the beginner. Just asking on how to "start a reef" is kind of a long answer. Your best success would be to read these first. Good Luck and welcome.

I started the same way. Fish only and then went for the reef stuff.
Read, read, read, its the best thing you can do. Try reading from many different sources also. You will find one book will say one thing and another will say something totally different and then through experience something will happen that no book mentioned.
Keeping a reef tank is fascinating and much fun. Enjoy.

Tonka hit the nail on the head. The reef Aquarium book is great. I just got mine in the mail last week. I plan on reading the entire thing. I am a beginner reefer also trying to gather as much info as possible. This board is also brilliant!! Good luck!!
