Berlin Airlift Skimmers

I can say yes and no. I've been using this cheap skimmer since I started my 55 gal FOWLR (8 months ago). It doesn't skim sometimes and sometimes it does ( and I mean lots of brown/green stuff). Right now I'm planning of purchasing a new skimmer, probably a Remora.

I saw one hooked up to a 50 gal last night at the local petkill(*****). It was actually pulling stuff out. I've heard the airstones need to be changed a lot. I was considering one for the 40 gal. I'll be getting today.
Please don't rag me for being at *****. I was eating dinner across the street, needed frozen brine, and it was late. I WILL NOT buy fish from this company. I think they should stop carrying marine livestock until the bigwigs pull their heads out of their.......well, you know ;)
Anyway, the skimmer seemed to work

I used one for a couple of months and was happy with the performance until....
First of all it's murder trying to find a replacement airstone (one made of that wood) that actually fits. Trying to shave one down is a lot of trouble and negatively affects the limewood.
It's also degraded in performance as it's become encrusted with algae and such , and even with regular cleanings it still seems to have pooped out on me.
I just replaced it with a prizm and I have to say that this thing pulls out so much more gunk that I don't know why I ever went the cheap route to begin with. I've got 2 prizms and I love them both- a little noizy though.

My Berlin Air Lift 60 seems to be working so far. First one was a Visi-Jet and I could not stand it. The limewood airstones used in the Berlin's can be bought at Pet Co for $7 (package of 3). Not sure how often they need to be changed tho, anyone know???
