Does anyone have an opinion which is the best hydrometer that costs under $40? I have the standard acrylic Seatest right now...any suggestions?

If you're willing to spend $40, skip a hydrometer and order a refractometer.

corallife deep six
seatest swing arm.
Both very good hydrometers for the money. About 10 bucks each, if you can go for the refractometer. You can also by a floating hydrometer, those are like 3 bucks or something. I use a seatest and a float hydrometer.

I just bought a ATC REFRACTOMETER on e-bay for $39 plus s&h it was a nice one from a good company that I order alot from. On the company web-site they sell for $70 but always put 1 or 2 for sale on e-bay. Send me an e-mail and I will tell you which site.

Seatest Deep Six, I switched from the rectangle shaped ones b/c you need to get the water exactly on the line for an accurate reading.

I agree with the others about the refractometer. If reefkeeping is a hobby that you plan on sticking with for a while, save your money and buy a refractometer. Do a search on E-Bay and you will surely find one. You will be glad you did.

Wow, thanks everyone. It just struck me that I have spent a lot of money and this seemed a strange thing to skimp on. Friday is payday:)
