Best filter to use

Hi all
We have just started to set up a small 29 gallon tank so we can move our poor little Clown that is being bullied. What I want to know is what would be the best filter to get. We have a standard flow one in there at the moment but was thinking about a canister filter as we heard this was the best way to go. We will also be adding coral etc so know we need to get one with good waterflow but do have a fairly limited budget so your help would be great
thanks

I would go with a hob filter, maybe aquaclear or emperor...they are cheap, effecient, and usually provide a lot of flow.

Ugh cannisters are a pain to clean and do not give a lot of flow. Emporer 400 would be best and they are cheap.

Not sure what the price is on the emperor but a refugium is a great filter and can be built cheaper than most canister filters.

I was at a fish store looking at filters today and I saw that emperor 400 was 45 dollars and emperor 280 was 35, so not too bad. I think that 280 would be enough filtration, but then you would have to worry too much about powerheads. I would go with the 400 and get a smaller powerhead personally. Good luck.

Cam, the filter doesn't have much to do with the power head needed. You still need to push the water regardless of the filter size.

if you are thinking canister you cant beat a Rena Filstar.. they are not a pain at all to clean....i run an XP3 on a discus tank and would not run anything else...HOB's are not even in the same league...i run NONE on my tanks....
on a 29 id run the XP 2 with the biochem zorb and some bio media...works great..ive got an xp2 on my 55 qt... they are great filters

oh, I thought that 400 gph was just like the say 1200 gph from a powerhead.

I know that people ask about total GHP. The water from the filter flows straight down. You still have to have a power head to push the water across the tank. That is how the oxygen is distributed throughout. Adding a larger filter would not stop you from needing a power head that reaches the other side of the tank. Larger filters are good though. They pick up the detritus and any uneaten food.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I love this forum, even when you least expect it, you learn something.
