Best fish selection for FOWLR Tank beginner?

We have a 90 gal tank that we're in the process of setting up, so this is a little premature, but I'm just trying to get some research done.

I was wondering what the best fish would be for this tank. We are beginners, so we're trying to keep to relatively hardy fish, with peaceful temperaments, and preferably reef compatible for the long term. No jumpers, since we have a light over top instead of a tight canopy / lid. (Are those interchangeable?)

I'm currently leaning towards a Royal Gramma to start with, since they seem to be peaceful, reef compatible, easy to care for, and able to withstand the mistakes of a new aquarist. That said, I'm thinking we won't be buying fish for a month or so, since we haven't started the tank on a nitrogen cycle yet.

Also under consideration are:
1) Flame Angel - Which, if we get one, is almost certainly going to be the last fish we buy for the tank!
2) Midas Blenny
3) Blue Reef Chromis
4) Ocellaris clown
5) Blue Sapphire Damselfish
6) Clown / Citrinis Goby
7) Six Line Wrasse (Or)
8) Christmas Wrasse

These are just some of the fish I looked up on Live Aquaria and thought might fit the look we're trying to create in the tank.
What I don't know:

1)Are any of these fish jumpers? Since we don't have a tight lid, that would be an issue.

2) Aside from the 1"/1gal rule of thumb, how many fish do aquarists with 90 gal tanks typically keep in their tanks? Would 5 or 6 fish be too many, or would that likely be ok? I'm trying to stay with relatively small fish, and possibly one medium sized fish to the the star of the tank. (I'll get back to you on the filtration, my boyfriend's in charge of that, and I don't have all the specs.)

3) What kind of clean up crew should I look for? Do I need to invest in any particular type of cleaner, like a sand sifting goby, and do they actually do anything to keep the sand bed clean? We're currently planning a shallow sand bed, 1" or so of aragonite or Caribsea sand.

4) What is a good test kit? Nitrates, Nitrites, Ammonia, chlorine, the works.

5)Any recommendations / Opinions? I'm looking to learn!

Sorry if this is the wrong place / thread / forum. I thought It would be appropriately placed under fish discussions, given the content was fish oriented.

2) Midas Blenny will do fine in a fish only tank
3) Blue Reef Chromis Dosn't have a good survival rate
4) Ocellaris clown if you have 1 will be fine
5) Blue Sapphire Damselfish mean (all damsel's)
6) Clown / Citrinis Goby may be picked on by wrasse
7) Six Line Wrasse (Or) could be mean to timid fish
8) Christmas Wrasse will eat any clean up crew you add

What I don't know:

1)Are any of these fish jumpers? All fish can jump, wrasse are known to. Add egg creat on top will stop most fish. Since we don't have a tight lid, that would be an issue.

2) Aside from the 1"/1gal rule of thumb, how many fish do aquarists with 90 gal tanks typically keep in their tanks? Would 5 or 6 fish be too many, or would that likely be ok? (I'll get back to you on the filtration, my boyfriend's in charge of that, and I don't have all the specs.) Depends on a lot of things, such as fish eating habits size how much you feed and your filtration.

3) What kind of clean up crew should I look for? Do I need to invest in any particular type of cleaner, like a sand sifting goby not a good choice they need alarge sand bed full of funa, and do they actually do anything to keep the sand bed clean? 1" or less nothing is needed We're currently planning a shallow sand bed, 1" or so of aragonite or Caribsea sand.

4) What is a good test kit? Nitrates, Nitrites, Ammonia, chlorine, the works. If this will be fish only then API Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite, PH will do. I would invest in a refractor meter will last forever and result are accurate.

5)Any recommendations / Opinions? I'm looking to learn! set up a QT and quarantine
anything wet.

Thank you!

Do you have any other fish suggestions?

Will a mesh top impact the lighting of the aquarium? I'm pretty sure I can get some screen mesh like you use for windows and just make a top out of that. Would that work?

I was just looking over in the new hobby forum about the refractometers and test kits. I'll definitely be investing in those!

The Midas Blenny - how will that do if we ever add corals?

Again, thanks for the advice!

Thank you!

Do you have any other fish suggestions? All per prefence tank size and compatabilty.

The Midas Blenny - how will that do if we ever add corals? Corals are different in a lot of ways, more test required, better lighting, much better water quality, no christmas wrasse. As for blenny never had one but they say they are.

Please don't forget the QT, if you want trouble free hobby it is a must. This can be a small 10gal tank that can be set up and taken down when needed.

It depends on what you make your lid out of, altho generally not. If you're going to use screen, get some of the 1/4" clear poly screen as opposed to window screen. You can even get kits with everything you need for making it.

The other popular choice is "egg crate" type lighting diffuser...it's really easy to work with (just need a pair of "dikes"). You can also get it in black if you look around. This stuff is great if you have to make cutouts for over the tank returns or HOB equipment.

Have you looked into the fox face? Very peaceful and hardy fish. Gets alone fine w smaller tank mates. Also swims the whole tank, giving you a larger fish compared to your stock list of mostly smallish fish.

I haven't forgotten about that! I was looking for one just the other day. I was talking to the local fish store, and they (one of the employees) said to put a piece of copper in the water, because it'll kill off a lot of parasites, pathogens, etc. I thought that this was a big no-no. As in, 99.9% sure that you didn't want copper anywhere near the aquarium water source or fish! Was I incorrect in thinking that?

Lol copper is bad yes. That said many people use it to treat ich and other pathogens. It can not be used w inverts or even after its removed can inverts be in a tank it was used in. It lingers. I am dealing w an ich issue myself rt now. I went w hypo. It takes longer yes but is much safer than copper

Sorry, I would not go to that store again, or ask the manager if this a common practice with the copper. No metal what so ever should go into salt water tank. Copper treatment solution and a piece of copper are completely different

That's what I thought. Glad to hear it confirmed. I will definitely ask if that's something they practice in store. If it is, any recommendations on websites to buy from?

Thanks for all the help!
