What is the best HOB skimmer for a 55 galon tank? Need one rated for atleast twice that. Need one with no micro bubble release to the dt and one that is preferably not too bulky. Outside pump preferred. Trying to help a buddy here. All of mine are in sump.
Thxs,
Mc

I was looking for one for my 30, my LFS told me that D&D marine just came out with one that looked promising. The unit seemed to be well built, all fittings and colars seemed to be heavy extruded PVC tight seals well manufactured. 100 gal unit sells for about $120.00 not bad from what I understand. Collection cup can be placed under the tank stand or on the floor for high capacity. I believe it can HOB or free stand too.

In my opinion the Aqua C Remora Pro is the best HOB skimmer. I have this and I would suggest getting the prefilter box, it looks cleaner than just having a pump in the tank and will elimate the micro bubbles. With the prefilter box you can also put filter media in it like activated carbon and keep it hidden within the prefilter box.

AquaC remora. I have it hooked up to my 72gal and its never released any micro bubbles in my tank.
But AquaC would be the way to go for HOB.

My Bak-Pak. Temporary skimmer on my 29. Though, it's sort of turbocharged, GenX-1400 NW pump, throttled back a bit. Can fill the cup in 45mins wet, or 6hrs dry. Though a big GenX may not be the best thing hanging in the display (it's hanging on my sump).
AquaC definitely...

You can get it for a decent price at bidding place.

Matt...As other people have noted, you will not be unhappy with the Remora.
I have used only two brands..the coralife super skimmer and the Remora so i can't comment on other brands, but the Remoras are very good.

I've never used one, but I've heard great things about the Deltec HOB skimmers. They are very spendy, but Deltec makes great skimmers.

$600 for a Hob is a little too much! But as I told SCSI, I am sure it can rip O2 molecules from Hydrogen!

I know I'll probably get some flack from others on the boards, but I use a Prism Pro Deluxe and love it. I have had absolutely NO problems with it, and it keeps my tank really clear. It was relatively inexpensive, too!

I would have to say all skimmers "work", if not they wouldnt be selling them. I guess the only real way to judge a "good" skimmer is with expir. with multiple skimmers.
Before my Remora, I had a Prizm and I thought that it was doing a great job and I had no idea why ppl on the board said they sucked.
Once I got the Remora, I understood why people said it sucked. THe prizm skims, but the Remora skims oh so much more!!!

I also agree about the Aqua-C Pro and it might be a little more expensive then some of the other skimmers on the market but you really get your $$ out of it. Also, you could easily find a used one online for $80-$120. I've had mine for almost 3 years now and it's highly reliable, requires almost no maint, easy to setup and it's fool-proof.
On a side note, Seaclone skimmers are probably not a good choice. Some people do have luck with them but I often wonder if they have ever used a quality skimmer and know the difference. That said, if they do work for you then that's a great thing and count yourself lucky.
