Lion, I am a huge believer in the QT and hypo or copper, but do you think sometimes it may be more detrimental to the fish/tank to catch it in a fully stocked reef tank? The reason I ask is I am looking for ideas for my new hippo tang that has ich. Hippos seem to be so timid, I feel like it would possibly over stress him to catch him, and put him back into QT, not to mention destroy my tank, and would the ich be there when he returns? There are ALOT of differing opinions in the forums, and I like your opinions regularly, but the thought of catching him and tearing up my tank feels a little hopeless.

For your hippo a couple good cleaner shrimp would do the job

They will clean him up a little bit but they wont take care of the problem...especially long term...You need to set up a qt and dose with copper and do hypo. Its 90% effective, but just so you know hippos are extremely prone to ich.

Hippos and other tangs should never be treated with copper. It damages their internal organs...particularly if they are in the wrong strength or for too long. It can damage them so bad they don't recover. Hypo-salinity is much safer and gives them immediate relief.

Hypo is the best course to take. But do understand that your main tank is now infected. There is no known sure medicine that is reef safe or for that matter invert safe that will cure ick. There are some out there that say so, but usually, the ick will return its ugly head at some point if you do not let your tank go fallow(no fish) for at least 4-6 wks. I'm sure I will get someone out there that has used something that worked for them, but in my experience I haven't found any. Cleaner shrimp are great if the fish will let the shrimp clean them. Most small fish will not let cleaners near them.

I have been using Ruby Reef Kick-Ich now for over a year if I have a break out of ich in the tank. I haven't experienced any problems with this product and it seems to cure the problem. I normally only get ich if I obtain a new fish that had it.

I have 2 QT tanks with copper, and cleaner shrimps in my display, and I know that removing all of the fish for 4-6 weeks will cure the ich, what my question was trying to ask was this, I have QT'd all of my fish with copper, I only buy my fish from a LFS that keeps all of their fish in copper, so how the ich got in my tank in the first place, I don't know, but if it got in there once, would it be waiting again when my fish get out of QT?

It can hitchike in on anything...rocks, corals, inverts..if they are in a system that has ich. Ich has different stages to it's life cycle, including one where it is on substrate, etc. If the tank is left fallow for 6-8 weeks, the ich should have died off.

I keep 3 neon gobies (goldlines and blues) in each of my 2 tanks and they do a great job of control any ich outbreaks. I also have 2 blood red shrimp in the FOWLR and 1 red and 1 cleaner shrimp in the reef. They also clean the fish of ich.
