Well when my dad had the yellow tang, we had a clip in the water that we just put normal lettuce on and they used to pick at it all day, and it never raised the levels because it would be gone so fast. For refugiums, I dont know enough to give you a good answer.

my yellow tang likes romaine lettuce.. someone correct me if im wrong but iceburg lettuce should not be giving because it has hardly any nutritional value.. all water..
I also had 1 piece of liverock that I bought from the LFS that had a small amount of hair algae on it.. was dieing back cause no phosphates or silicates but she ate all of it too.. kinda funny.. my emerald crab, turbo grazers and hermit crabs would just work around the 2 small patches.. 1 day after i added her, it was gone..lol

Romaine isn't much, if at all, better itself. Seaweed sheets or Nori should be the main staple. My yellow tang loves the feather or saw-blade caulerpa, Caulerpa taxifolia. My Naso loves pecking at the chaeto ball in his QT.

just beware that the caulerpa can become quite a pest if it gets grown on to the rocks and put in a tank without any algae eating fish
