Live rock varies immensely in price and quality, and the two are not always related. You can pay a lot for crap rock or a little for great rock.
If you need a small amount, I prefer to buy locally, since you can pick and choose what you want, and if you can transport it home submerged, it probably won't need re-curing.
As far as online options, google is a great starting place. Suffice to say, SWF.COM sells some great live rock. I haven't used it myself, but I've heard nothing but good things about it.

I find the Mom and Pop LFS...I am picky about my rock, and I like to chose each piece, the Mom and Pop run LFS usually have rock that has been sitting a bit and have coralline already on it and abounding in critters...

I have had far more luck with LFS live rock than ordering online. The LFS is almost always more expensive, but normally the pieces are fully cured, have some coraline on them and you can pick and choose each piece for looks, etc.
I actually just picked up some nice LR from my LFS on Tuesday night and got a 35lb cured piece with coraline and some polyps for $60, which is cheap for Long Island. LR here goes anywhere from $9-15/lb

Don't want to make a whole new thread, so bear with me. Does live rock from a LFS still have hitchhikers on it like stars etc or have they mostly "gotten off" during the time it was at the LFS and you get just a rock with coraline?

It depends on the store. Most of the time I get brittle stars in my LR, even if the LFS has had it for a long time. I have gotten some evil little hitchhikers when the rock is fairly new and I go to pick it up. I actually got a baby oyster on a LR the other day.
I try to buy rock that I know they store has had for a few weeks and normally get rock that is in their reef and coral setups, rather than just sitting in the LR tank.
