what is the best way to raise the salinaty in my tank. right now its right at 1.20 at 78 deg. can i add about 1 cup of salt right into my bioball system or is this detrimental to the fish i have in the tank now. this is a 110 gal tank all other water parameters good PH 8 amon. 0 nitrates 0 nitrites 0
scorpion fish
coral beauty
maroon clown
cc starfish
3 crabs
and how fast/slow should i raise it?
thanks for any advice given

what i do to raise mine is at every WC i increase the salinity a tiny bit...like if my DT is at .22 and i want it to be at .23 i will make the salinity in the new water a little more than the DT so it will increase the tanks salinty to the proper range within a few WCs.

I have been raising my salinity...was 1.020 now it is 1.023...I want it at 1.024/1.025
When I do a water change, I mix my saltwater up a day ahead and churn the water with a power head so it is well mixed. I want to raise the salinity, so I just make my mix a little higher...the result is a little higher but not as high as what I mixed. Each time I do a water change, I do the same thing until I have my desired SG.
This is just 1 method...it is slow enough to make me feel confident...I don't want to shock my fish and coral too much.
Geo28 you beat me to the same answer...

IME the best way to raise salinity is to top off with salt water instead of RO.
BTW I keep my SG (not salinity) at 1.027-1.028, 1.020 is dangerously low.

I agree...
1.020 is way too low...hence why I am raising it...but IMO 1.027/28 is way high...the ocean is 1.026 and my books say not to exceed that.
There are many ways to raise the SG...now 2 are listed....both methods work just fine....

yup both methods do work and choose the route that works for you.

as for books telling you, by the time it reaches print it may be outdated. or not.
but IME several years of keeping reefs at 1.027-1.028 will show that no harm will come from it, despite what the manual says.

how fast can the SG be raised without harming any of the fish or inverts. in the tank. should it be raised over days or weeks?
again thanks for your input

0.01 per day is considered safe. I wouldnt advise exceeding that.
(disclaimer: insert disclaimer of your choice here that state if you do what I did its not my fault)
I have boosted my specific gravity as much as 0.04 points in a day (over the course of 24 hours about 0.01 per six hours) with out noticed die off of tank denizens. this includes fish, it IS absolutly dangerous, especially for echinoderms and any thing else that relies on osmoregulatory processes.

thanks had him about a month now had a small problem with his eye that i think i caused when i added him. used the wrong type of net and he got stuck in it. quite a chore getting him out. got a better net gave him a quick fresh water dip every thing cleared up and he's been happy as a clam ever since.

I have a picture of that species hanging on my fish closet, though I must say my favorite scorpion is the purple (Rhinopias eschmeyeri) but thats still a beaut

Did you mean to recommend .001?

Why can’t we raise the salinity in a single day?...I do when I acclimate my new critters. SWF.com sends their critters in SG of 1.010 my tank is 1.023/24 that is quite a difference...

You can I have done it but its not safe and I dont reccomend it.
to subject a single critter to a faster acclimation is unavoidable and sometimes the creatures dont make it even after HOURS of drip acclimation. to subject an entire mini ecosystem to drastic changes can have unforseen and sometimes catastrophic results. slow changes are better than fast changes, its just safer. would your risk everything alive in your tank just to rush through something when you know you can take your time and not have to worry about unintended results?
