Beth and Fluval 404

I read your post on the Fluval 404 subject. You mentioned that you were not impressed with the output of the 404. I bought a 304 and when you get the instructions you find something interesting. The owner's manual has a table in the section of "Criteeria for Filter Selection." For the 404 it lists the pump output at 340 U.S. gph. If you go to the bottom of that column it gives the "Filter Circulation" which is only 225 gph. To me this means that when used as a filter you are only getting 225 gph rather than the 340 gph which I think is the figure retailers are using to sell these products.
That may explain why you are not getting the output you expected.
Maybe someone from Hagen can explain this.

Yes, it stands to reason that water would slow down as it has to push thru filter media, however, right now, I am using the 404 with just one of the chambers filled partially with carbon...and its still slow as snails. I believe I just got a lemon 404 as previous models I've had have worked better. Also, my 404 impeller assembly is messed up, since day 1 I've had problems. I need to see if I can find a place that sells the assembly replacement part, but so far, haven't found a any sourse [haven't been that aggressive about seraching either ;)].
I might just contact the manufacture, too, and see what they'll do about it.
