Hi all, I'm new here. I have a 40 gallon tank with a yellow tang (small) and 2 small percula clowns. I want to add a powder brown or Naso tang. I heard the powders were hard fish to take care of. What's a better choice to go with my yellow tang? As far as looks, I like the powder brown tang better. I know my tank is small but so are my other fish. My local fish shop has a 2 inch naso and brown.
Feedback would be great!
Thanks

u know i had a yellow tang in my 35 and he started getting bigger and started losing scales on his nose part because he would run into the glass and naso and powder get bigger than the yellow tang i believe so i wouldnt even put them in there i guess u could have the yellow in for awhile but he might have to come out in the long run good luck tho :happyfish

Wow! And it hasn't died? I cant imagine it being happy, and even if it is-I do NOT advise it!

Wow, I've never heard of a 40 being too small for a Tang.My yellow is a baby too. He's the smallest I've ever had. Thanks for all the advice guys. I was told if you get them young (small) they will adapt pretty well and not grow too big.

That is a HUGE myth. Doesn't matter what size tank he's in, they don't "grow into the tank." I cant think of a single book that says that a 40 gallon is suitable for a tang, and I cant think of a single person on these boards that would recommend it either! But thats okay, you learn from your mistakes...

Well thanks for your advice, but just to let you know I had a yellow tang in a 30 gallon years ago. Had him for 6 years! When I moved out of state I gave the tank to a friend, she still has him.

I believe you, but I DO NOT recommend it..just because it lived, doesnt mean it liked it.

Does anyone here have a naso in a smaller tank?
Also, since it's not a good idea to have tangs in my 40 g, would it be fine to get a small coral beauty? What's some really nice vibrate fishes to get for a 40g?

Also, does anyone have a SHY yellow tang? I've never known them to be shy, but my little guy loves to hide behind the corals. He freaks out when you walk by. He only likes to come out to eat, which he does very well!

NOOOOOOOO saltwater fish dont grow to the size of their tank. Have you ever heard of of an ocean thats to small ? i dont think so. fresh water fish can adapt beacouse lakes and ponds are different sizes TAKE THE TANG OUT OF THE TANK AND BRING HIM BACK TO THE LFS !!!!!!

You might want to look into some of the smaller fairy wrasses; they are vibrantly colored and are rather active fish.

I would have to agree that a 40 gal is to small for a tang but I wont flame you for it. We all made the same mistake when we first started so the best we can do is warn you and hope you learn from any mistakes that you make, this is how learning is done. I wouldnt advise adding anymore tangs or anymore fish into the tank. Your bioload is very high having a tang in such a small environment. Id suggest returning the tang to your lfs or investing into a larger tank, somewhere along the lines of a 75-125. Depending on your filtration system if you rid the tang im sure youd be fine with the angel. Wrasses are good vibrant fish and gobies are pretty cool as well. Hope this helps you with making the right decision.
