Big Tanks

Just a thought, anybody that has a big tank( over 75 gallon) aren't you concerned about the weight of your tank possibly breaking your floor and ending up in your basement? <img src="graemlins//confused.gif" border="0" alt="[confused]" /> <img src="graemlins//uhuh.gif" border="0" alt="[U-Huh]" />

Not so much of a concern with a 75 gal, 600 lbs of water and maybe 150 lbs of stuff. It certainly is a concern with larger tanks. I have friends that have reinforced the floors under their tanks with lolly columns in the basement. I did have a 120 in an apartment once that took on a quite a lean before I took it down for fear of a tragedy.

If you do the math,a 180lb person standing on the floor actually puts more strain on it then a 1000lb tank. You see it all boils down to the ammount of area that the load is spread over. The 180lb person is standing in less than one square foot.So all that weight is centered in that one small spot on the floor.A tank is usually spread out over a two or three foot by six foot area.So if your tank weighs 1000lbs,that is really less per square foot than the 180lb man...But it's still a REAL good idea to either have the tank against or over a load bearing wall.Or to have it supported below with some sort of reenforcement...
