bio-ball (Good or bad)

Does bio balls bring good effect on the filteration? It seem that alot of people out there does not like them very much? Can you people tell me the different? thank you.

they provide surface area for bacteria to grow. is that a bad thing? nope. would i use them for a reef? nope. Do i use them on an agressive setup? yep. Why? cause i got suckered into buying it and i refuse to not use something that cost me as much as the wetdry filter did.
for a reef IMO it is better to use the DSB and LR with a skimmer than to use a wet dry filter. is the first more expensive? yes but you get what you pay for.
