Bio Balls/Live Rock question

Hello all, I'm new here and new to SWA's but, I think I'm gonna give it a go and start a tank. I've read just about every thread on this site over the past couple weeks and of course I have many questions.
So I guess I'll start with this: I dont have a tank yet but assuming i have a 90 gallon how much LR do I need in order for a Bio Balls set up to not be necessary? I want to do a sump and may get into doing a FUGE down the road but am unsure about this.

you want about 1-2lbs of LR per gallon of water. but that is justa a rule of thumb, it also depends greatly on the types of fish you will be keeping and how many of them.
