bioballs are not a problem unless they are improperly used or maintained
whether you "need" them or not is open to debate and is a matter of opinion.

You runing a reef or fowlr?
The key to success with bio balls is providing adequate biological filtration without trapping excess detritus. Trapping detritus produces nitrates and inevitably leads to problem algae outbreaks.In most tanks if you have l/r you will not need them.
