The age old question to bio balls or not to bio balls. All answer are correct, To quote beaslbob "my .02" If its a FO tank then sure why not (must be rinsed once a year in thirds). In reef tank no because of the possible risk of high nitrate build up (why risk it). Another note: with large bio load in a FO system you'll need to add a protein skimmer and or micro algae (to remove high nitrates).
+1
Fish don't really react to high nitrates, it's the inverts we keep as CUCs that are affected. I think above 40 in nitrates are deadly for them. However fish can live in nitrates up in the 100s and show no stress at all. Not that I would allow my tanks to get that bad even with just fish, a water change is all that's needed to keep the nitrates down. Macros and and a skimmer will keep the water pristine.
