I would say no. I've never liked bio-wheel filters. They get clogged up very quickly and do not have much available living quarters for pods. I'd be nervous using it on a horse tank, for water quality reasons. Now if you you bought a refugium and added algae, absutlutely!!!

there is some sort of fuzzyish black algae that grows on my 10g tank walls, i just leave the algae on except for the front wall, besides the rock and sand, there is lots o bacteria and pods livng on the walls as well. my skunk shrimp is always on those walls stuffing down food.

Pending on tank size I would and have used these filters in the past. Anything under a 35 gallon tank I would not advise it however.

That was one of my exact set ups. a 55 with to large bio wheel wheel HOB filters. If you have enough live rock/sand this will be sufficient for you. Water changes monthly of course.

i have a biowheel on my 20 gallon qt and it is constantly getting messed up to the point of where it won't turn anymore. i've always had horrid nitrates in there as well. i'd agree, not good for smaller tanks.
