I have: 1 Fluval 404 canister filter w/ 2 foam pads; 2 Emperor 400's with the biowheels on; and 2 Penguin Powerheads. I've been reading alot that you shouldn't have biowheels on in a saltwater tank because of the nitrate problems. I don't have any nitrates. Although, I do have diatoms and the red slime algae on my glass and sandbed. Is it best to remove the biowheels? I don't want to kill any bacteria and lose my bioload.
I have 150 lbs. of sand, and 50 lbs. of the LS (well, Arag Live). I also have about 25 lbs. of LR, and about 15 lbs. of lace rock. Would it be ok to remove 1 biowheel from each filter?
I want to say that prior to putting my 2nd Emperor on my tank (2 weeks ago or so), that I didn't have such a bad diatom bloom, but I can't be sure .... Which is why I want to see if the biowheels are a partial culprit.
I just put my Prizm skimmer back on the other day, and when I emptied it yesterday, it was a medium yellow color.
