are these just small balls filled with beneficial bacteria? Is there a certian amount of them I would need - if any at all?

Bio balls are actually small multi-surfaced objects that provide massive "substrate" for the development of beneficial bacteria, usually run in a wet/dry filter. They were developed before the major change to reef aquarium keeping ... Live Rock and Live Sand, both of which you already have in your tank. Generally speaking I'd say you probably have enough Live Rock and Live Sand in your tank to forgo the use of bio-balls.
Just my .02 as usual.

The bio balls also break up the water as it trickles over them thereby oxigenating the water before return to the main tank.

Thanks for the replies! Pmauro - I have heard of using the styrofoam peanuts, I'm glad that they are working for you! I was wondering......my H.O.T canister is currently empty; I'm using it for circulation only because my LR/LS is providing adequate filtration. However, I'm one for the "more is better" theory, especially because I want to increase my livestock. Would it work if I put some peanuts in my empty canister to provide more surface area for beneficial bacteria? My appreciation, in advance!:)

I don't know that it would hurt but I am by no means an expert, you may want to ask Beth Boomer or Sammy. I am sure the answer is out there. But I can tell you it seems to be working fine for me
