Dont know what i can do about this. Its about 81 during the day with lights on. and drops to 76-78 at night. is this normal or what? I have a 50w heater (lol)for tanks 5 gallons or less and i have to keep it on low or it will get up to about 84. Im sure the temp right now isnt a big issue but im thinking once i start to get corals it might be. Any suggestions?

the 81 degrees is ok, but you want to get the rigth size heater first of all. You should shoot for <2 degree temp change on a daily basis.

I have a 200w heater, but its in with my curing LR atm. It was a little bit less of a temp change at night but even with that...i had it on the lowest setting almost and it was 81. :( i thought you wanted tanks <78

many members keep their tanks around 80-81, mine right now sits at 78-79. Summer seasons, even with central air my tanks get around 79-81 depending.

I was having this kinda of problem. I have 2 - 50w rena heaters one in my DT and one in my fuge and I had them both set for 78 and the temp was going from 78-82(81) with lights on(150w MH) . I reduced both heaters to a 75 and since them my temp has been between 79 - 80. Maybe that could help you.

That's a lot more temperature variation than in the ocean, so its not healthy for fish either.
Get a decent 150 Watt heater (I personally use Stealth), and you'll be fine.
