black seahorses

Today while in our LFS they had 2 very nice black seahorses. I have never seen a seahorse in real life and this was so neat. My only concern was they were in a tank with damsels, triggers etc. They seemed to just do their own thing but so neat to see. By the way, they are captive bred it said on the tank and cost $52.00 CDN don't know what you all price them at in the USA.
I don't want these fish but how easy are they to keep in the home aquarium?

Not easy. There is a forum just for seahorse and pipefish. Go on down to it and read some of the info for them. Worth the trouble if you have the time.

I'm SO glad that you didn't do anything impulsive!! Where seahorses are not impossible in the home aquarium, they do take a bit of research to set up and maintain a suitable environment for them.
And, you are SO right!! They are very neat to see!! I have 4 of my own horses here at home, and I still seek them out in the LFSs that I frequent, just because I love to watch them so much.
Nice post...maybe you've gotten bitten by the sh bug enough to plan a future sh tank, who knows?

ok well giv a word with the lfs manager. tell him "YOUR AN IDIOT"
triggers and damsels are both mean and fast eaters and are nEVER goo for seahorse tanks under no circumstances.
EDIT: STUDY A TON read everything you can find online about these. i wouldn't buy the ones from that lfs, if the lfs isn't gonna take care of them right then don't encouage them to buy more. just tell them that they are not supsoed to be with those fish and they need to learn to read what there doing....

Ummmm, I think the original poster has already stated that she was NOT interested in purchasing said horses...just that she enjoyed seeing them.
Word to the wise...chill a little.

If you are interested in trying horses...the 10 gallon nano would make a lovely home for Dwarf Seahorses

Yes I have no desire to have these seahorses. The chance to see them was reall neat though. Very beautiful how they flutter around the tank. This same store also had some very large Moorish Idols in, I have never seen them either in real life but had the chance there too. They were special ordered in for a customer but I don't know how well they did or are doing. But wow what a sight to behold....

Dwarf seahorse, never heard of them. I know absolutley nothing about them but seahorses in general look very delicate to deal with. I love researching things so maybe when I have nothing to do I will do some "curiosity" research about them.
So rest easy, no seahorses coming this way...... drinkingc

Well, perhaps you'd like to enjoy ours
My Icon is a picture of "Titan", the biggest male in my tank.About 1.15 inches from snout to tail tip.
This is my dwarf seahorse tank. It's a 15 gallon tank with 21 dwarf seahorses or ponies as I refer them. The adults average one inch in length and the fry are just under 1 cm. The neatest thing about them is they readily breed in captivity having up to 14 fry, both adult and babies have easy appetites to please~they're main diet in the wild, and captive bred is Baby brine Shrimp.
Here a link to my new pony tank

It is nice to here from someone who took the time to make a difference for a pair of fish
Seahorses are the most unique fish I have ever had the pleasure of welcoming into my home. They are very social fish and become very familiar with their keepers. Monalisa's family of four is always up and waiting at the food dish when she gets up for breakfast.
Thanks,
Rykna

Wow, they are so cute. Hard to believe you have that many in your tank. I would love to know what type of tank setup you have for your seahorses. What do they require in a tank setting.
Could you post a full picture of your tank??
Also, what is the cost for these cute "ponies"??

I'm sorry!!!! That was the wrong link.
Here's my 15 gallon set up
https://www.saltwaterfish.com/vb/showthread.php?t=290815
Equipment:
~15 gallon high tank(Bronco300, who started me on ponies, prefers 10 gallon)
~Florescent lighting(want to upgrade to a small T-5)
~AquaClear 50 hang off Biofilter
Substrate: Dead Sand
Dead Rock
Artificial Plants-hitching posts.
You can fit up to 50 ponies in a ten gallon. but the hardest part of keeping these little gems is water quality. You can't put much else in their tank cause most would find the fry very tasty.
I can email you some links if you like
