has anyone ever tried blue christmas lights that would be used on a tree for moonlights?
moonlights are kinda expensive and at times hard to mount.. so if you got enought x-mas lights all blue.. maybe a few white and throw them up in the canopy and line the walls of the inside do you think they are powerful enough to illuminate the tank like a moonlight would?

I have the ones mentioned above. Three cover my 150 gal tank.
The problem with xmas lights is they are always so long.

Try Radio Shack! They have blue LED's for under 2 bucks and all the stuff to rig up a moonlight system

I would be concerned about christmas tree lights. They emit a tremendous amount of heat for their size and might start a fire if they were splashed with water or got salt creep on them.
Call me paranoid.

If they're the rope lights you could use them, I know a lot of people who do. We went with a DIY setup on my tank. You have to cover all of the wires with tubing and silicone or it will all corode. In hindesight it probably would have been easier to get two of those fully assembled ones.

my old roommate did this, what he did was get a piece of plywood and drilled about 50 holes in it, and rammed the lights in the drilled holes, it looked really good, not function since it covered his whole 29 gallon bow front but it did illuminate the tank...

We'll you'd have to mount them, wire them, and power them (the powering can be tricky)
