I have 2 blue/green chromis in a 29 gallon. A couple days ago I noticed something wrong with one of their eyes. (only on 1). The eye looks as its full of mercury or possibly a bubble. It looks very silverish and he's having a hard time swimming around, yet alone not eating this morning. I cannot take a decent picture of it. has anyone experienced this with chromis?
Thanks for any replies
Nick
All other fish , Yellow tang and six line wrasse are fine. Parameters are in check.
They were added to the tank in November 2003. The first in the tank.

Is it possible that he is being picked on? There really is not much you can do while he is in the tank. You can try garlic soaked feedings. Also, alterante with zoecon soaked food.

I doubt he is getting picked up since all of them get along well. I have a smaller yellow tang and a sixline wrasse. 2 chromis total. Would the garlic soaked food help a bubble in the eye. Beth have you ever experienced this before or know anything about it? Its been in there since Wednesday. I do have selcon I can soak with brine. Will this help
Thank you very much for the replies

On this forum, over the past 5 yrs, I have experienced just about any and everything over and over again.
Is this actually a "bubble in the eye, or is eye just generally bubbled. Is it popeye such as the picture of the clownfish in the Diseased Fish Thread?
Popeye can be caused by a few things: Injury, infection or both.

Beth,
Thank you for the reply. It doesn't look like popeye. The eye is out just abit more than his other eye. when you look at his left eye it just looks like there is a bubble in there and its very shiney. It doesnt look cloudy either
Thanks again for the reply I appreciate your help

I tried snapping a few pics this morning but they did not turn out well. He seems to be hiding alot in their dead coral both of the chromis sleep in. Right now as of 830 pm cst the lights are off. Tomorrow I will attempt a pic if I can get a good one. He had brine shrimp for supper - he didnt eat anything for breakfast.
Thanks

Dead coral...these fish dart around quite a bit...he may have scraped his eye on some of the bery sharp edges of dead coralheads.

That is exactly what I am thinking but would it still look like a bubble in its eye? How long should it take to heal with optimum water quality? Its been since wednesday.

Yes, like a conjunctivitis. It may require antibitics in which case it will mean QT. Try the heavy feedings with garlic soaked food. Real minced garlic.

have you been feeding him anything othe than brine shrimp?chromis damsels and other like such fish are omnivours they need a balenced diet of meaty foods and plant based foods.brine shrimp is on once in a while but it accually has the dietary needs to fish as equivilant of popcorn to humans almost no nutritional value you might find it helpfull to give your fish a variety of foods along with a garlic suppliment for imune system health.

They get a series of food. Brine every so often but I mainly stick to Aquadine , Formula 2 and pellets. The tang gets dried seaweed and all the fish munch on that.
Still cannot get a good shot of the eye but he is out and about today every so often he will go hide in the coral with his head peaking out. Time will tell.

you might want to try a different type of foods also such as emerald entrese which a frozen cube for omnivours enriched with vit c maybe a veggie flake peridicly I only suggest these food as a basis not the accual brands but these are the brands I use and cyclopseze you will find that most of your fish will eat all and any of the aboved mentioned.they are a multi diverse ingredients that your fish can get a well ballenced diet.which realy does reduce the risk of illnesses.you will find that your tangs will also eat the amerald entrese it is and algae based food with mysis shrimp.plus I also use garlic extreme with all feedings.as far as that eye bubble it could be just that it could be very reasonable to think another fish might have bit him which could have created an air pocket behind the eye.I have read about this happening on other fish health forums.proper nutrition and a close eye on your water quality can help speed up healing time.and for you beth we dont always agree on some things but the one thing I will say we do agree upon is proper nutrition and water quality Ro or not im a stickler on those 2 subjects.proper nutrition is a biggest key to maintain healthy fish.your alright in my book
