Blue Hippo HLLE?

I think my Blue Hippo has HLLE, there is alot of skin that seems to be missing around his face, and he is never happy anymore meaning he doesn't swim around alot like he used to, he just hides and doesn't get excited about anything anymore. This has been going on for a few months now but it seeming stopped getting worse at one point but he has been quite depressed lately
. Also his gills are starting to look rather red or inflamed
. My water perms are fine. Also my Clownfish is looking beat up and his fins are wasting away but I think my damsel could be fighting with him, as he is very aggressive at times, also the clown has no other problems though and is acting normal, the same was happening with my Eibli Angel but he is healing up now and looks better. Go figure nothing is wrong with the damsel
. What do you guys suggest I do. Thanks.
Here is my setup
55 gal. FOWLR (will be a reef someday)
plain old light hood w/ 15 watt standard bulbs
Emperor 400
A powerhead for flow
Spectrum Marine food
a few pieces of LR and a bed of LS
Been up for a about a year now.
Inhabitants
Some sort of Damsel (yellow with a dark colored dot on his upper back)
False Perc. Clown
Blue Hippo Tang
Eibli Angel
Cleaner Shrimp
a couple hermits and snails

Flakes and pellets are alright sometimes, but frozen is much healthier. Pick up some frozen formula foods. They contain about eight different kinds of food each. Rotate adding Selcon and Zoecon to the food while it defrosts (one vitamin per night). I am a little bit concerned about the red gills. Is he being chased at all? How do the other fish look?

I have not noticed my Tang being chased, usually that damsel picks on my clown. The other fish don't have the redness or erosion problems just my clown is a little beat up looking and the angel was a little beat up but seems to be getting better. Also will the frozen food with those vitamins help cure him? I definitely think it is HLLE (I'll post a pic or two tomorrow) so what is the best course of action? Last any thoughts on what the redness may be?

If you want my honest opinion, he is outgrowing your 55. Hippos cannot stay long in a tank that sized. They are open water swimmers. Has he been swimming rapidly for awhile now? The better quality food and vitamins will certainly help. The red gills are from the stress of a confined area. People do not think that smaller tanks effect tangs, but I assure you, they do. The angel will not be alright in there as he grows either. Just so that you know.

I agree,
I think Tangs need a Minimum of a 75...
I am also fighting HLLE....and I am following the same proceedure of Selcon...
with food....I admit my water changes were not enough...but have corrected that issue
I increased water Flow
Decreased Feedings
Increased variety of food (mostly frozen with an auto Feed of Sprectrum)
Added a Ground Probe
Added about 75 lbs of live Rock
Built a Refugium (29 with deep sand bed and Chaeto)
All to fight the HLLE....(well and to make the tank healthier all around)
Guess I am saying....GOOD LUCK

My tang is quite small, and was never before stressed about the tank size, he doesn't swim rapidly, never has either. The stress started with this disease. Anyway I did a huge water change, and I got a bottle of reef trace for vitamins, I want to pick up some stress coat, some frozen food, and vita chem. Also what are some of the vitamins I should add to the food?

What do you need stress coat for? Just so that you know, it will make your skimmer over foam and can clog the fish's gills. You may want to skip that. For vitamins, Selcon and Zoecon are good choices.

Ok, I'll drop the stress coat. However is there really any difference between Selcon and Zoecon? They seem like the exact same thing based on their descriptions. Also what is your opinion of Vita-Chem? I was also thinking about homemade food because I heard it is the absolute best food for fish and they love it if it is done right, would that be a good idea? If so what should I get/use to do so and should I still use these vitamins in it?Lastly any other good supplements/additives or vitamins I should get?
P.S. Thank you so much for your help so far, it is seriously very appreciated.

They are similar. I use vitachem myself. It is high in Vitamin C. Homemade foods are definatley a good choice. Beth has a recipe in her Common Treatments FAQ at the top of this forum. For another vitamin, Reef Plus is pretty good. And, you are very welcome

The key with HLLE, aside from just "vitamins" is Omega3 fatty acid. I like zoecon because of its consistency.

Beth could you post a recipe on this forum that would be best for dealing with this? Also would take make a good "regular" food also once my tang heals? Lastly would this also help my clown grow back some of the fins he lost either to my damsel or a small case of fin rot? If you could post one it would be so appreciated. It seems like I go from problem to problem with my tank and any help you guys give me is so wonderful, Thanks so much!

Beth's recipe is here https://forums.saltwaterfish.com/t/127007/faqs-fish-diseases-treatments-quarantine-health-info#post_914889 for future reference, this is located in her Common Treatments FAQ. This will help your clowns as well, it will help all of your fish. Add the vitamins.

I just got the zoecon and vita-chem. However the zoecon says I should have Kent Zoe as well and use them together. Is this really needed or will the vita-chem do the job? The Vita-Chem and zoe seem similar anyway. Also what is kent marine C like? These all are confusing me as the descriptions make them sound like the same thing. I hope the Vita-chem is good, all the descriptions said it had the most vitamin c.

I do not use Zoe, with the zoecon. I use Vitachem and Zoecon. I have never used the Kent C.

Whew...thats good to know. Glad I went with Vitachem. Boyd seems like a good company i really like chemipure too. I just added a squirt of zoecon and vitachem to my tank, I'll certainty add those to the food as soon as I can get the stuff to make it with. hopefully I can get to the seafood market tomorrow. Beth's recipe said to avoid oily or really fatty fish when making this stuff however i did say to use a little if treating HLLE or fin rot, but would i need oily stuff if i have zoecon? Lastly would i know how to balance what I put in the mix. The recipe doesn't give measurements such as a pound of shrimp or 2 whole cloves of garlic. Does anyone know the measurements. I just want to be sure I do this right. Thank you again.

Is this what the food should look like once it's blended? So you know I used scallops, shrimp, fish, garlic (2 cloves), a baby carrot, and a head of broccoli. Also added a squirt of Zoecon, and Vitachem.
