Hey I've been told the hippos at less than 1.25" are hard to care for. Is this true? Why is this?
Thanks for looking

As with all tangs they are ick magnets. Hippos less than 1" are true babies and very susceptable to ick. Remember this fish grows to 10" in size. You always see them on the small size but they grow bigger than all the other tangs.

I got a tiny hippo as a feebee, it no bigger than my pinky fingernail...I mean tiny. he is a big boy now two years later, he is a good 3.5' - 4'. They may be prone to ich, but I have found them to be a hardy fish.
If ich isn't in the tank, don't introduce it by using a QT tank, you won't even have to worry about it. I got into saltwater tanks because I wanted a Hippo Tang. Long before the movie Nemo came out.

IME the tiny blue hippo's are much less hardy than say a medium sized one. It's not impossible to keep one successfully, but not very common. I'd def. pass on the tiny ones and spend the extra money for at least a small to medium sized one.

Sorry just had to point out that the above statement (in red) is incorrect.
Hippo Tang grows to about 12"
Naso Tang grows to about 18"
Sailfin Tang grows to about 15"
Sohal Tang grows to about 16"
Orangeshoulder Tang grows to about 14"
Clown Tang grows to about 15"
These are just a few that grow bigger than the Hippo Tang.

Well I've been talked out of a hippo tang for my 120. 12" of fish doesn't seem smart in only a 48" long tank... What do you guys recommend for a 4'x2'x2'?

Personally I think that any tang that gets to only 8" should be fine. I thinking maybe the yellow, purple, black, powder blue or powder brown.

I think you could go with a
Yellow Z. flavescens 7.9" max

Scopas Z. scopas
7.9" max.

Kole C. strigosus
7.1" max.

For a while anyway.

On that Drs. site i they tell you Yellow tangs need 100g tanks. But at only 8" max that can't be right.
Can anyone confirm?
Oh and i think a Blue would be fine a 120 for a long time. Maybe not full grown but they won't get there for a few years, right?

Tangs are constantly, swiming and know their territory. They need the space as they tend to suffer "anxity" on a regualar basis.
Part 2 yes you will be fine for a couple of years, but as they grow temporment and territory changes too. Ever tried to get a 6 " fish out of a stocked tank not easy...

Well I yet to see any tang that is bigger than 9" (HippoTang by the way). Who knows maybe their growth is dependent on water volume
.

Thanks Joe! A fish attracting a parasite seems impossible to me too. Next subject; 'nitrate factories".
On the size subject: tanks are outer-reef dwellers and cover a lot of territory. I think it would be impossible to document their space needs; but if you see a grown tang in a 4' tank and the same fish in an 8' tank; they act like completely different fish. The ability to swim this extra distance, unhindered, has to benefit their health.
